Unfortunately, there is no mention of his patience at the plate.

His major league stats are a pretty small sample size, and his walk rate is not good. That's too be expected.

Anybody know what his walk rate was during his minor league career?

Gathright reminds me a bit of Lofton. If he can take a pitch, he'll be a good major league lead off hitter for many years to come.

Single A: 62 BB / 90 K in 548 AB

Double A: 16 BB / 45 K in 211 AB

Triple A: 48 BB / 93 K in 462 AB

Total minors: 1221 AB, 126 BB / 228 K

Nice work. Got any comparison stats. Lofton? Pierre?

That's not too shabby.

Minor league, Kenny Lofton: 159 BB / 266 K in 1423 AB, .300 AVG, .379 SLG

Minor league, Juan Pierre: 90 BB / 74 K in 1305 AB, .330 AVG, .392 SLG

Interesting. But, his walk rate would likely decrease if he played for the Cubs.

As would his average, SB %, defense, etc. That's all a given.

The more I look at Gathright, the more I like him. Look at his OBP in his minor league stints (360, 406, 419, 399, 384, 388). Not too shabby, plus he's only 23...

If Dusty wouldn't play Dubois, and won't play Murton or Cedeno, what makes you think he'd play Gathright? "Need to ease him in, dude, it takes experience to play CF, Patterson/Macias/Hairston (insert veteran lame guy here) know how to win, and they can handle that heat, dude."

Hendry can't afford to let Furcal slip through his hands. The way this offseason is going, it is going to be difficult to find a leadoff hitter or SS better than Neifi if the Cubs lose out to the Dodgers.

I'm hoping Hendry will give Furcal some type of increase to the 5/50 that has been reported.

I'm sure this has been posted, but the one time I saw it mentioned the offer was different...

"Furcal stakes get higher

Shortstop would earn $39 million in 3-year Dodgers deal"

The Dodgers have offered the free-agent shortstop a three-year deal worth $39 million, a person familiar with negotiations told the Journal-Constitution on Friday.

Los Angeles' bid came on the heels of a five-year pitch worth nearly $50 million from the Cubs.

The Braves' offer is for less that five years and less than $10 million per year, according to a person close to the negotiations.

That's not the whole article, though. But just part of it..

They can have him.

My offseason plan called for Nomar over Furcal for one year anyway.

Of course, it also called for a trade of Castillo and Bradley, and the signing of Giles.

think about the big $ free agents the cubs have missed out signing the past few years. thome, hampton, beltran. how many people would want any of those contracts now? not to say furcal will be along the same lines but if they dont sign him it might be for the better. i really like cedeno at ss anyway.

I wanted Beltran then and I'd take him now. The Mets would have to eat some salary of course.

is a .266 average with 16 hr's worth 11+ mil? last year anyway he was way over paid. even his defense was sloppy last year. i'm glad the cubs didnt tie up huge $ long term on him mysel.

I would have loved to have had Beltran, he's going to put up a .900 + OPS for a long time to come. That's a hell of a line to get out of center field.

But, I don't value that at 7 years, $119 million. He wanted to make his fortune, he found a group of idiots, good for him. I'd gladly take him on my team today if New York decides to try to save a little bit of the money they've wasted

Rotoworld reporting via LA Times that Atlanta is now offering Furcal 3/40. Forget him, Hendry's lost his man.

On to the Julio Lugo sweepstakes? Ugh.

Lugo Lugo Lugo Lugo!

Alright, having said that, how do we outbid the Braves to get him? Pie for Lugo and Gathright? I think I read the Devil Rays wanted Marte.

Once again Hendry focuses only on one guy and most likely has lost him.

What's the backup plan?

Re-sign Nomar? Good luck with that one after ignoring him since free agency started.

he might and he might not. he gets paid the same (or close to the same anyway) either way. some guys tend to slack off when they sign a big contract like that. only time will tell if beltran is one of them.

I'm confused. You're seemingly totally opposed to dealing Derrek Lee before he gets a contract like these guys got in the past.

How many people would want Lee for 12 million dollars for three more seasons if he struggles after 07?

I think most here would have no problem with Cedeno but with Neifi right there its a scary proposition. Cedeno and Castillo would have been nice but that isn't going to happen either. If we don't sign Furcal we might be in trouble.

Meh. After all this potential talk of free agents, going into next season with Walker/Cedeno as 2B/SS would be a bit of a letdown to me.

The Dodgers are offering that, not the Braves.

From what I gather, Hendry's backup plan is to trade Williams, Patterson, Walker and a prospect to Texas for Kevin Mench and Alfonso Soriano. Soriano plays 2B, Cedeno plays SS, Mench plays RF. Then, he either still tries to bring in Pierre, or Bradley, or signs Kenny Lofton for CF.

Didn't say I liked it, I just said that was apparently Hendry's backup plan. If he goes that route, he'll have money yet to spend, so I presume he then proceeds to spend the rest of his dough on a pitcher like Millwood, Washburn, Weaver or Burnett.

Don,

Acquiring Mench really worries me. I don't think he's that good at all.

I have no problem with acquiring Soriano (bat him 6th) - has he changed his tune lately on shifting to the outfield?
