I know, I know it is Ken Rosenthal's, but it should be worth a chuckle:

According to FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal, the Yankees could pursue Rafael Furcal as a center fielder.

That'd hardly fit in with the club's plan to reduce payroll, although it'd be interesting to see the Yankees leave Derek Jeter at shortstop with one more superior defender on the roster. While this is an extreme longshot, you can be sure Furcal's agent would love to see the Yankees involved until the end. Nov. 10 - 4:43 am et

Does anybody ACTUALLY expect Furcal to move to CF? 2B maybe, CF, I don't think so. Not to mention does anybody REALLY expect the Yanks to pursue Furcal as a CF, when they could REALISTICALLY get somebody like Juan Pierre, Dave Roberts, even Torii Hunter who has ACTUALLY play the position?

And why does the Yankees also have to throw their names into EVERY friggin' free agent? Furcal to NYY doesn't even make sense, but something tells me, this reeks of Steinbrenner wanting another "name" on the Yanks.

Or BTW:

The Marlins and Cubs have reportedly had preliminary discussions about a deal involving Juan Pierre and Corey Patterson.

Just how much payroll do the Marlins have to shed? Part of the problem is that even GM Larry Beinfest doesn't know the answer to that question right now. Pierre will make at least $6 million and probably $7 million-$8 million in arbitration and he's eligible for free agency after next season, so a trade is a possibility. The Cubs' level of interest may depend on whether Rafael Furcal can be signed. Nov. 10 - 3:49 am et

I think there is a real possibility the Cubs could have a Pierre/Furcal 1-2 punch in 2006. Not saying it will happen, just sayin.....

The Miami Herald talks about the possible trade:

In addition, two reports put the Marlins in the middle of preliminary discussions on a multiteam trade that is said to involve the Chicago Cubs' Corey Patterson and Florida's Juan Pierre.

I'd rather have Castillo and I hope that the Cubs are thinking along those lines because Pierre is overpayed IMO. The most I'd give the fish is Mitre and the Cubs pay all the cash.

I don't have a real problem with CPatt for Pierre, straight up. Reminds me of Choi for Lee, in a way. You?

No. IMO Lee is an impact player while Pierre is overpayed for what he does. Also, if the Cubs are going to move Patterson I would rather see him go in a major deal because I think he would add value to a package Hendry could put together. The Cubs need an impact bat in the OF and getting Pierre takes away one more chance to find one. If Hendry can get an Abreu type hitter for RF that is the only way I would like a deal for Pierre. The pessimist in me just wants the Cubs to get Pierre just to get Perez the heck away from the top of the order. If the Cubs don't land Furcal, Perez will still be batting 2nd with Pierre leading off. That would really bother me.

Pierre and Castillo for Patterson, Cedeno and Walker maybe? Would we need to throw more into that deal?

NOTE: I'm bad at fantasy trades.

Hello understatement.

Are you thinking that the Cubs would be able to sign Furcal?

Yes...that would give you Furcal, Castillo and Pierre up the middle. Baker would have the speed and defense that he wants, though maybe too much speed. And in that scenario, Neifi might ACTUALLY BE a backup.

I guess having Pierre and Furcal would present a leadoff quandry...

I would hate to lose Cedeno and the Cubs would need to get a 30/300 guy in right then. If they can do that and the fact that Neifi would be a role player I'd be ok with that. The only thing that would really hurt is when Ramirez goes down for his yearly injury Perez will be there playing 3rd no matter who they have on the bench. If Ramirez is doing his stretching and getting in shape for 2006 that would ease my mind.

IMO I want the better hitter of the two leading off. I'd love to see a team that had a good enough lineup to bat Pierre 8th!

This would suggest that it's a more than two team trade.

Very interesting. The Dodgers, Tampa or Phillies perhaps?

I'd probably trade Patterson and Walker for Castillo and Pierre, straight up.

Castillo is set to make 6 million, Pierre will likely get 6 million or so. So with Corey and Todd, they'd probably save a good 5 million.

After wasting $5 million of our 44 or so on Neifi and Rusch, the above would still leave us $27 million to fill right field, the bench, a starter, and maybe another arm for the bullpen.

Man...I wish Maddux would hang it up, without his contract we could still get Furcal and Giles

My guess it's part of a trade that moves Lowell to the Dodgers and brings Pierre to the Cubs.

Good point. A major move would be to get Bradley for the Cubs but watch the Fish be the ones that nab him.

That makes no sense. Why would the Cubs want Bradley if they have Pierre?

Bradley can play rightfield. If he can return to his 900 OPS, he wouldn't be a bad option for RF.

The Cubs can put Pierre in right because he has a gun for an arm! :D

That's true. I don't want Pierre then and give me Bradley. Then give me Furcal and Matsui/Giles.

No way is he near enough an impact bat for RF.

Career line: .269/.350/.426/.776

Sorry, but these numbers are worse than Burnitz career, and equal to Burnitz last year with a dozen more walks.

Vance did make the disclaimer that he would have to return to his .900 OPS form.

Just curious: What would you all consider acceptible OBP for a leadoff man?

Looking at career stats: Furcal's is .348 while Pierre is at .355.
