4th place in the division for a consecutive year.

If that happens, it won't be because Neifi got some at bats from the bench. It'll just be one of many factors. If they let him start at SS or 2B, that would be pretty bad, and he'll probably get plenty of at bats either way with Dusty managing, but it seems odd how so many people like to pretend that Neifi is going to bring the team down single-handedly. Maybe his greatest value is as a scapegoat. Then again, I'm confident we'd all find someone else to blame if he left.

It's not the signing itself, I think it's how indicative it is of an organizational philosophy that bothers so many people.

It's just not Neifi. It's because Hendry hasn't shown to me, and many other posters, that he's capable of making the moves necessary to make the Cubs better than the Cardinals, Astros, and Brewers. Re-signing Neifi and Rusch to relatively pricey deals isn't a good sign.

I don't think anyone here has a problem with Neifi being signed as a bench player. The problem is Hendry decided to give Neifi way too much money to play on a Dusty Baker team which pretty much guarantees Neifi will get way too much playing time and way too much time batting 2nd in the lineup.

It's just a sign that management really have no idea what they're doing when it comes to making a championship caliber team.

It occurs to me that many posters are comparing our team's philosophy and transactionto those of the Cards and Stros. I understand why and think it makes sense,

Lets assume that Neifi is going to be a back up (and lets hope while we are at it). Has anyone actually looked up the stats and salaries of their backup MIFers and/or OFers? If so, can you post those nos.?

1.Furcal doesn't need a defensive replacement.

2.Neifi doesn't have enough offense for 2B.

3.His defense is less valuable at 2B.

4.The cubs have big strikeout pitching staff, they aren't as dependent on IF defense as others.

5.Neifi is probably a worse hitter than several of our pitchers, who is he going to pinch hit for?

Good thing the A's are only 2 BART stops away.

I'm going to go ahead and pencil in Neifi as the starting 2b. Just hope he's batting 8th.

He's a slap-hitting switch hitter who can't get on base to save his life and who at least looks like he might have some speed. In other words, he's Dusty's ideal #2 hitter.

Don't forget that he's really good at bunting the ball to the shortstop. He's a bunting machine. That's exactly what we need out of the 2-hole.

This pretty much seals it for me. I have lost completely all faith and confidence in Jim Hendry's baseball acumen and his abilities as a GM. This is as disturbing- no worse, actually- as the Burnitz signing was last year.

I wrote the Tribune online with my feelings on that and it was posted on their site. I'll echo the gist of it today:

Neifi Perez is simply not the type of signing a team intent on winning the division makes. On a team concerned with improving a poor offense and maintaining some degree of team chemistry, signing a guy who already said he would insist on signing someplace where he would start who can't hit his own weight is idiocy. Utter Idiocy.

If this is the type of offseason we can expect, 2006 is going to be far worse than 2005, and it's laid squarely at the feet of Jim Hendry. There was no "Sammy Sosa" situation hampering this offseason. there was no last minute, last-dicthc effort to fill shortstop (or Middle Infield backup) as there was right field last year. There are no excuses, and frankly, my patience is near its end with this GM.

I predict Ronnie Cedeno will be the starting SS for the Cubs ..............in 2017, when he signs a $40 million dollar/4 year contract as a 37 year old. The Cubs will be willing to spend the money because of his 7 All-Star appearances and 8 Gold Gloves.

Ronny Cedeno should be the backup middle infielder.

I don't know the numbers of the Cards and Stros backup infielders, but I can pretty much guarantee they're not making $2.5 mill a year.

So Neifi isn't going to start in 2006, just like he wasn't going to be a starter in '05, right?

mmmmm, yeah.

We all know he will wind up starting alot of games. This just proves the Cubs have no commitment to winning.

It's official:

Cubs agree to a two-year deal with Neifi Perez

Oh, and fire hendry already. Twice.

My prediction: if furcal is signed, neifi starting at 2nd, batting 2nd. If furcal isn't, neifi at ss, batting 2nd.

Way to make the team worse (pending the walker trade, of course)

Don't forget, aside from those other qualities, he led the league in double plays. What's not to like!?!
