Another reliever is likely to be heading toward free agency. The Mariners aren't likely to pick up Guardardo's 6.25 million team option for 2006. Link.

The Mariners have told Guardado and his agent, Kevin Kohler, they want him to return -- but not at the value of the club's $6.25 million option. They have asked him to pick up his $4.25 million player option instead, with a guarantee of some incentives, bringing the value closer to $4.5 million.

But Guardado's camp believes he is healthy, and would earn more than $4.5 million on the open market. So, he is likely to file for free agency, rather than pick up the option.

If Guardardo files, it will bring the list of FA closers to four: Farnsworth, Guardardo, Wagner, and Ryan. You can also add potential closers such as Gordon and Dotel to that list.

There figures to be a ton these...should we just sticky one thread called "Declined Options" and sticky another thread called "Declared Free Agents" or "Going to Arbitration"?

Or something similar?

I think there's usually a potential FA thread that includes all the info you're looking for.

I remember reading something about Guardado wanting to play for the Cubs a few years ago, but aren't he and Hawkins pretty good friends? Wouldn't shock me if the treatment LaTroy got at Wrigley keeps him from considering the Cubs.

Yes, he even talked to the Cubs before deciding he wanted to close and not set-up. And his best friend in Minnesota was LaTroy.

Another reason how fans can help recruit players. I understand almost all players will go where the cash is but it sure helps if you have a supportive fan base like the Cubs have. Of course I'm sure LaTroy would say otherwise.

If LaTroy hadn't sucked people might have been more supportive.

Maybe but I'm under the belief that being more supportive when a player is struggling might help them more than the negative attention.

Fans can only control their own behavior. Some wanted to boo, but they probably didn't take into account the consequences of their actions.

I think I just heard on the radio that the Mariners did indeed pick up his option today. If so, we should probably modify the title of the thread.

With the reports of him not getting picked up, he can't be all that happy. Any chance of a trade? What would it take, if they're afraid they'll lose him next year would it take more than a decent relief prospect? Leicester?

Leicester has pretty much no trade value.

as was mentioned in another thread, with koronka tearing up the AFL, the cubs might already have their other lefty for the pen next year. they must have seen something in him to have kept him on the 40 man last year so hopefully they made the right move and he'll be good out of the pen.

The Cubs should bring back LOOGY extraordinaire Mike Remlinger.

The Cards will probably sign him & he'll has his best year of his career. Luck just seems to always go the Cards way.
