In today's Arizona Republic, there's an article suggesting the Diamondbacks should look at Steve Stone for GM.

The writer goes on to admit that Stone isn't being seriously considered, but he raises the idea of Stoney being the GM of the Diamondbacks.

The Diamondbacks have their list of general manager candidates, and Stone is not among them. This is a shame, because few people in baseball carry Stone's intelligence, his vision and his keen eye for talent. It should be obvious to anyone who has heard more than five of his broadcasts.

"With my access, I've talked with most every owner, every general manager and every player in both leagues," Stone said. "There's not a lot of guys up for jobs all across baseball that can say that."

I don't know whether Stone would be a good GM or not. I'd like to watch him try, just to see if he could.

The article also chronicles Stone's attempt to become GM of the Cubs. The Cubs have never had interest in letting Stone run the team.

Stone has been trying to run a baseball team since 1986, when he told a high-ranking member of the Cubs that his team was going to finish in last place the following season unless they do something smart, like hire him.

That didn't go over very well, but just as Stone predicted, the Cubs finished in last place.

Later, Stone offered to be a general manager who worked without pay, and at the end of the season, the Cubs could pay him whatever they wanted based on his performance.

"I went to the Cubs six, seven times and said, 'Will you please allow me to interview for this job?' " Stone said.

"I'll say this much: They were consistent. They kept saying no."

We know this much. I bet Kerry Wood, Kent Mercker, or Moises Alou would never play for a team run by Stone.

1986? So Stone was going behind Dallas Green's back (and over his head) to Tribune executives to get Green fired while he was announcing Cubs games? Doesn't sound like an honorable thing to do.

I agree. Therefore, I'd like to see him become Arizona's.

Well, in that case, let's help him get the Cardinals' job.

The Cardinals don't have Conor Jackson and Carlos Quentin, therefore I would like to see him in Arizona. :)

As much as I like Steve Stone, I think we're seeing why no one has taken a chance on him in a front office position. He's WAY too outspoken, and if you don't agree with him, he'll go straight to the press and play the victim.

Not that I'm doubting anything he's said, but between this article and his situation with the Cubs last year, he doesn't seem to know how to stop talking.

Now you know why they are glad the pompous guy is gone, no love lost.

Self absorbed, yes. Hopefully someone gives him a chance though, because he is insufferable as a second guesser. Reading that article made me think "what an arrogant jerk" The whole baseball world is foolish, except him. glad he's gone. Obviously SINCE 1986 no one thought any better of him.

No, I agree. One needs look no further than his ludicrious trade idea this past summer. He'd be real bad, and then what would happen to his baseball Miss Cleo rep here in Chicago?

And going over and above Dallas Green's head gunning for his job was pretty low. Openly politicking for a job in professional sports usually doesn't work too well, and I can't imagine the good ol' baseball boy network looked kindly upon that.

I suppose its not surprising, but while I don't know if he would be a good GM, I certainly see no evidence to point to that he would be a poor GM. Even if he is pompous (which I continue to believe is a ridiculous assessment) that wouldn't preclude him from being a good GM. Frankly, I wouldn't mind one bit to have a GM with a bit more backbone when it comes to holding the line with star players. Part of the problem with Sosa was organizational deference to him.

Hey, JC, haven't seen you here in a couple weeks!

YOu don't think Stone shows a little too much "woe is me"?

The only things you have to look at to know Stone doesn't exactly have it to be a GM are some remarks this summer. Stone suggested that the only untouchable on the Cubs was Rich Hill and his bad minor league numbers. We should have traded Hill when his value was high. Also, Stoney suggested that we deal Aramis and someone else I forgot who for Manny and Bill Mueller. While I think Manny is a star, I find it harder to get a young ALL-STAR 3b who is already locked into a long term deal that wants to play for the organization. Manny is as bad or worse on defense than Aramis is and Aramis is way younger and at a harder posistion to find impact players. Stone knows a good amount about baseball and is exceptional at relaying his thoughts and ideas through the media, but that in NO WAY gives him credence to be a GM for a major league team.

maybe stone could come up with hilarious nicknames for players that would inspire them to sign there for less money

actually, he'd probably just devote all his time to hiring atmospheric scientists to come in and improve the visibility in bank one ballpark and he'd forget to actually field a team

Stone sucks, I was never on his bandwagon in the first place. As a player, he had one aberrantly good year, the rest of the time he was average at best. In fact, even his good year wasn't all that good--a 1.30 WHIP and 101 BBs is NOT impressive, but Cy voters are always swayed by W-L record above all else.

(Trivia time: name every Cy Young winner of the past 30 years who won 20 or more games in a season just once in his career).

As a color announcer, Stone was and is cloying, condescending and crass. It was Harry alone that we cared about listening to Stoney, not you. Any of a dozen other color guys could have shared the booth with Harry and been just as long-tenured in the booth as you were.

So, Stone as GM? Sure! As long as it's not GM of the Cubs.
