Jim Hendry should be doing this regardless of who wins the WS.

If it takes an American League team winning to inspire him to make the best possible moves for the team, then I want a new GM.

Well written Rocket!

Does Hendry go out and try to put together a team to win it all next year? Does he get the top free agents in the class? Does he make off season blockbuster trades?

I think Hendry has targeted certain free agents and players to get in a trade regardless of the Sox' success. I do think that if nothing is happening for the Cubs during the off season, the success of the White Sox may pressure him to make a trade later (spring training).

I wonder if this pushes the Trib to open the coffers even more out of fear that the Cubs fans may migrate to the southside. It's a bit of a stretch...

I just hope Hendry doesn't see that success and try to build around Scott Podsednik and Jermaine Dye like players.

However, I believe Hendry will go in that direction that is, pitching, defense and speed. Something like signing Furcal and trading away Walker to go with Cedeno at 2B along with going hard after Burnett and Milwood.

A better question would be: If the Sox win it all, will the Trib fear that the fan base will take a hit, and subsequently, attendance and marketing revenue? Would they give Hendry more money to spend in the offseason to put together a better team and have a better chance of being better than the Sox in '06, and gaining that edge back for '07?

I think if the Sox win it all, the Trib makes less money in '06. Hopefully, they'll think long term, invest more in the team to gain that market share back in '07.

I just don't understand why it has to be one or the other with so many of baseballheads. Some guys can do both well!

I think that anyone can see that the White Sox's success this year is due almost entirely to their lights-out pitching staff. Every pitcher on that team - starters and relievers - has pitched better than expectations (some more drastically than others). I think (read: "hope") Hendry sees this as clearly as we do, and if he does try to emulate the White Sox, it will be their pitching, not their batting, that he goes for.

The media folks seem to be saying it's because of small ball.

And we ALL know the media is baseball savvy.

This---in order---as to why the WS played well.

1: The starters

2: playing in a weak division (only Cleveland worried them)

3: small ball.

I'd even throw in their relievers before or after playing in a weak division. Their relievers were far more important than small ball.
