I apologize if this was somewhere in the middle 15 pages of this thread somewhere.

When will they get rid of the OF umpires that they add for the playoffs? Those guys are almost never in a position to make a call because they don't seem to know what to do. I don't really blame them. Putting an umpire down the foul line is like playing Eric Karros at 3rd base: little good can come of it and there's an excellent chance things will get screwed up.

I hate instant replay mostly because it's based on the false premise that the officials- with the benefit of replay- will always get the call right. In football every time there's a replay the announcers make their guess about the call being upheld/ overturned. The announcers are only right about half the time. A bad call is even more frustrating when it's upheld by replay as is very often the case.

I hope MLB never goes to instant delay.

That would be terrible. So much of the game is objectional anyway. Could you image a replay for balls and strikes. That would absolutely ruin the game.

Yeah...the games are not quite long enough now!

I could see limited replay in areas that Peter Gammons mentioned earlier, but I'm sure that it would be all or none.

I still hear people talking about if the ball AJP swung at was in the dirt. I just don't see it and I hope it doesn't happen.

Didn't see that. What did Gammons propose?

Obviously calling balls wouldn't work even with replay, as evident with the situation last night. Gammons suggested using replay in regards to calling homeruns and balls that may or may not have hit down the line.

Has any reporter or media outlet attempted to reach Bud Selig that anyone knows of? I'd like to hear him comment on that.

The funny thing is that I haven't even heard his name mentioned.

I could see that. There is a solid boundry to compare it to. You can look and tell if the ball his the line, or what side of the poll the ball left the park on. Also isn't something that would come up very often in a game

Bud quit. Turd Ferguson is the new commissioner.

One of the other things was whether or not a ball hits the pole. Gammons said that with the new designs of parks it's only getting harder for the umpires to make the correct call. Now that I think of it, he mentioned having it as a resource when it comes to the possibility of fan interference.

If I'm a sportswriter (and God willing, someday I will be) he's one of the first people I get comments from, after the Umps, Scoscia, and AJP.

Fan interference.. [sarcastic laugh]

I like the idea when it comes down to those singled out things.. but not every pitch on if its a ball/strike. Then it would be pointless to have umpires on the field. They could watch the replay after each pitch & the game would take forever.

On top of that the strike zone always seems different. There is no way that would be possible. I could see a little red flag getting thrown onto the field after every pitch.

Know that I think about it, if there was instant replay Z would have likely had a no-hitter in 03 if I remember correctly.

Does anyone else think Soscia blew it on this one? The rule for protesting was stated on one of the earlier pages of this thread, he can't protest whether or not the ball hit the ground. However, he could have protested the fact that the play was set up by the umpire pumping his fist calling the out, then reversing the call. Had the umpire made his call clearly known from the get-go, there would have been no controversy. But since he didn't inform the ump before the next pitch that they were going to finish the game under protest, now a protest can't be reviewed. I think he blew it.

Pretty sure this is non-protestable

I think Premium pages have 20 posts, and Regular UI pages have 15.

NEW YORK (AP) - Umpire Doug Eddings said he should've been more emphatic in making the call that helped the Chicago White Sox win Game 2 of the American League championship series.

"The only thing I'm down on myself is I should have sold it either way," Eddings told The New York Times for a story posted on its Web site Thursday night, a day after Chicago beat the Los Angeles Angels 2-1 to pull even in the best-of-seven series.

"I should have either said, 'No catch,' or, if I did have a catch, that he was out. Which I never said: 'He's out,"' Eddings said.

Eddings was escorted by two Orange County sheriffs and a Major League Baseball security officer as he exited the flight from Chicago, the newspaper said.

White Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski struck out swinging with two outs in the bottom of the ninth Wednesday night, but he hustled to first and was safe because Eddings ruled the pitch was not gloved cleanly.

Thinking the inning was over, Angels catcher Josh Paul had rolled the ball to the mound with the Angels already coming off the field. Eddings' call stood and pinch-runner Pablo Ozuna scored the winning run on Joe Crede's double.

Eddings told the newspaper that he planned to change his style to more clearly reflect the difference between calling a strike and calling a batter out.

Plate umpires are trained to shout "No catch!" or indicate that the ball is in play after a swinging strike; Eddings, who has maintained that he was right in saying the ball hit the dirt before Paul gloved it, was silent.

Mike Port, baseball's vice president of umpiring, told The Associated Press on Thursday that Eddings did nothing wrong and that umpires are not required to audibly call "No catch."

Bold #1: If he had said no catch, Paul would have tagged AJP OR, if he had rolled the ball, would have alerted Escobar to pick it up and throw it. That's a BIG regret.

Bold #2: Looks like the umps fly in to John Wayne Airport.

Same situation, call goes for the Angels at Angel/Edison/Anaheim/Stadium/Field/Park?

Eddings would need a SWAT team flying into Chicago. MLB security wouldn't cut it.

I wish I were kidding.

No, you should have called it and maintained the call. One way or the other. Needing to sell the call is what led to the situation.

Next time you're selling it ... let the teams know the price tag ahead of time.
