Are there are young managerial candidates out there that Billy Beane would be comfortable in hiring? It seems like nearly every major league hire is a retread coach from the "old school". I'm curious to see if Beane can find a manager that is open to the statistical analysis that is so important to the A's organization. This will be a very interesting hiring season.

A lot of people seem to think the replacement will be Bob Geren. I won't pretend to know anything about him beyond the fact that he's currently the A's bullpen coach.

Actually according to LA Sports radio and the sporting news Macha is not on the short list for LA.

I read the Miami papers this morning, and many down there believe he'll end up being the Marlins next manager.

Hoops

This would make sense. I guess that Freddi Gonzalez doesn't get an opportunity this season.

That's good that he could still be around when we bid adieu to Baker after 2006.

My thoughts exactly. :)

The LA sports media are bashing the ownership hardcore. They all liked Tracy and have used this as another example of a calssless organization. They claim that DePo just was a puppet to control. They believe that the odds on favorite is Terry Collins of Houston fame. Apparently he was a roving Minor League guy (similar to Little for the Cubs from I can tell) and is well liked by the organization.

And we think Baker is bad. Collins is far and away worse.

I have to assume Astros fans like Garner. Bochy is probably well liked.

i know an astros fan that despises him.

I think Beane simply realizes that very few managers do anything to make them worth millions of dollars - so why spend money on them? Was Macha worse than Baker? Doubtful but Beane is smarter than Hendry.

I guess I disagree, but you are certainly entitled to your opinion.

That person should check the Astros record more carefully. And then he/she should have to deal with Baker for a year.

You said he sees managers as "fungible" twice in this thread, it looks like you agree with poudre.

To clarify: I disagree that Beane is "smarter" than Hendry. I haven't seen any evidence of that. That's just my opinion.

to use your standard, check the A's payroll and record. I certainly think Beane has been much smarter in his managerial choice than hendry. think about it, the cubs are paying baker $4 million a year. at best, he is harmless so why spend that much money on him? to me that a good indication beane is smarter than hendry.

Wow, I mean, I think that's so obviously true that there's no way I would have assumed that's what you were disagreeing with. I'd give you 10:1 odds that if you stuck hendry in oakland years ago they wouldn't have done nearly as well. Maybe he's not actually smarter, but I think beane is clearly better.

Now that might be true. Comparitively speaking, Beane has done a better job than Hendry, though I think that Hendry's has made only one major mistake, and that was hiring Dusty. Unfortunately, that mistake may tarnish Hendry forever.

But the notion that Beane is "smarter" is without any support, IMO.

If you gave the two an SAT or something, I'd put my money on Beane.

Good for Beane.
