So back in March/April, it was announced that my town (State College, PA) would be getting a minor league team. Awesome, right? Brand new stadium less than 3 miles from my house, probably cheap season tickets....I was thrilled.

They then announced that the team would be in A Ball, in short season NY-Penn League. Good enough. 30+ home games. No Cubs affiilate in the league, but that's okay.

They didn't announce affiliation right away. Many assumed it would be Pittsburgh because the owners of the new team were the group that owns the Altoona Curve (AA Pittsburgh)..

So yesterday, they finally announce the affiilation. ST. LOUIS CARDINALS. They are moving the New Jersey Cardinals to State College.

Well crap! Can I really get excited about a Cardinal A Ball team? Or should I just suck it up and enjoy it since it's so far removed from the major league level?

You won't see many future ML'ers there, if you do it'll be b/c the Cards will draft a 1st rounder out of college and send him there before deciding to send him to the Quad Cities for the end of the year.

Root for them. If the Cubs had a team in the NY-Penn league, I'd cheer for the Cubs affil. when they came there.

they won't be called the Cardinals, so i guess i just root for them in their own little world.

EDIT: As per this article, the Cardinals affiliation will end after 2006 (or be renewed). Here's crossing our fingers for a Cubs team! (not likely, I know, as it would mean pulling out of Daytona, Lansing or Peoria in all liklihood)

Have fun and just enjoy the baseball. Minor league baseball is a lot of fun.

When I lived in Des Moines I loved going to ICubs games even though I'm a huge Cards fan. Watching players that you can actually see develop at a rapid rate is very cool.

You might get to see Colby Rasmus, Tyler Herron, and Wilfrido Pujols.

Unless they've moved up to Quad Cities by next year.

Yeah, who knows who will be on the team at that time. The NY-Penn League doesn't start until June 2006

I believe the NY-Penn League is short-season A ball, so the Cubs would have to move out of the NWL and Boise to get a team in that league. The Cubs have already pulled out of Lansing - their low-A ball team moved to Peoria.

Gotcha, thanks. Well I've never been to Boise, but I could probably guess that State College has as much to offer! Plus we're closer to West Tenn and Daytona!

After moving to NM, I realized just how much there was to do in Iowa.

Being very serious here.

There is more to do within 5 blocks of my house in Chicago than there was to do in the entire state of Iowa.

It's a good place to raise kids, but that's about it.

"Raising kids" is pretty substantial, probably more substantial than ANYTHING that's within 5 blocks of your house.

Not to be argumentative, but what can you do within 5 blocks of your house that we can't do in Iowa?

I didn't mean to start a fight between chicagoans and Iowans, I spend a ton of time in Iowa as my entire family lives there and that is usually the more rural/farm areas.

I was 22-26 when I lived in Des Moines. It was a very hard town for a young 20s person to live in. The town had a lot to offer if you were 12 years old or 35-75 years old, but very little for a recent college grad. Iowa is very conservative and I am not. What it comes down to is that I'm a city person and Iowa doesn't have any true cities.

As far as things to do within 5 blocks of my house, that's not fair because I live in one of the best hoods in the greatest city in the world.

I absolutely love Chicago, and I agree that it's one of the greatest cities in the world, if not THE greatest city in the world. I can see why you'd want to vacation there, but what does it have to offer (specifically), even downtown, that Des Moines or Iowa City don't offer, other than major sports teams (which is pretty relevant, actually)?
