one exemption after 2003, one after 2004, one after 2005.

bay's exempt also in the same fashion.

yeah, I guess that makes sense. But I was thinking Bay was exempt because he didn't lose his rookie eligibility in 2003. Bonderman had a full year in 03. I assumed he wasn't exempt because of that.

I'm not complaining about getting the 5th best offensive player in baseball for free.

My understanding is that the exemptions start the first season a player appears in a major league game, regardless of whether he plays enough to lose rookie status for the next year. So, for example, Greenburg's one plate appearance for the Cubs this year starts the exemption clock ticking and he'd be exempt through 2007.

Well, in that case neither Bonderman or Bay would be exempt.

he would be points free through the 2007...which means you can keep him for free after the 2007 season.

he'd use his first exemption after 2005. his second after 2006, and his third after 2007. so he'd be exempt going into the 2008 season...at least that's how i understand it.

That's my understanding too; an exemption means keeping a player after the year without counting against the point limit for keeping players for the next year.

Right. You don't use exemptions for someone before they even debut. This is Bonderman's third year, so this is his third, and final, exemption.

Adam, of course, is very interested in this conversation with Teixeira and Matsui being third year players. :D

One question about points. Is the point total that counts against the limit based on the time the player was on your team, or based on the entire season (relevant for players who weren't on your team the entire season)? And where do you find the point totals for each player on Sportsline? (OK, two questions, but they're related. :D )

It's the points for the whole year. To find the points, go to sortable stats and click on your team. When the page comes up, switch the "Source" from fantasy to MLB.

OK, now I got it. I wasn't changing the source from fantasy to MLB before. That's why it was showing me players no longer on my team and not showing me the players you just traded me.

My keepers:

Burnett (453.6)

Cordero (exempt)

Crawford (520)

Davies (exempt)

Furcal (475.5)

Iguchi (exempt)

McPherson (exempt)

Peralta (exempt)

Schilling (129)

Sizemore (exempt)

Total points: 1578.1

Minor league roster:

Aardsma

Durbin

Gonzalez

Humber

Loney

Mathis

Murton

Pinto

Sing

Stauffer

Murton is currently shown on my major league roster, but he still qualifies as a minor leaguer because he had less than 200 at bats with the Cubs (the one bright side of Dusty's refusal to give him more starts :D ). Stauffer, I'm not sure about. On one hand, he had more than ten major league starts. On the other hand, he was back in the minor leagues when the season ended. I know that during the season we can put players on our minor league rosters regardless of major league time if they get sent back to the minors, but I'm not sure if that carries over to the offseason. If it doesn't I'll either release him or make him a keeper and release somebody else.

My hardest decision was deciding whether to keep Lowry or Davies. I decided on Davies because psychologically I couldn't justify releasing a player after I just traded for him.

(Edited to erase evidence of stupidity :D ).

i'm no baseball historian, but i'm guessing schilling has played more than three major league seasons.

um, yea, you don't regain exempt status if you have less than 10 starts or 200 abs. stauffer is not eligible to be a minor leaguer.

 Doh, I know that; I don't know what I was under the influence of when I typed that. I'm still well under the limit (that's what happens when you're dead last and have fewer points on your team than anybody else to start with).
stauffer is not eligible to be a minor leaguer.
OK, I'll either drop him or make him a keeper and drop somebody else before the Halloween deadline.
