So, after tonight's 'heroics' in the batter's box, who here still thinks that Corey(he of the .185 avg in September, and .220 overall) has any place with the Cubs anymore, at any level?

Discuss.

I'll take it seriously.

I think that, with a winter away from baseball to reset his mind, Corey *could* be considered an option to bat 8th and play a good defensive CF given a good ST, but be a prime candidate to be replaced via a trade deadline move.

I think that the days of Corey being considered a top player, or even a guy who just needs time and patience to become a star, are over. I think the best he could hope to become is Mike Cameron.

I think the Cubs probably trade him for cents on the dollar this winter at the GM meetings, though. He has little to no chance of success here in Chicago.

I was watching the Astros broadcast of the game, and the announcers were talking about the Cubs asking Corey to see a sports shrink. Anyone else here that? And do those guys do any good for athletes?

I've heard that, but I don't know what good it could do. I really think the best thing for Corey would be to pull a Ricky Williams and get as far away from baseball as possible for a couple months.

I think that, as Cubs fans, we'd all like to see the guy succeed, ideally, despite how frustrating it is hearing about his talent for so long and not seeing results on the field. I also think everyone agrees that Corey has been dreadful this season, wasn't great last season, and can't be counted on as a contributor in the future until proven otherwise. Somewhere in him is a good baseball player. Maybe it happens, maybe it doesn't, but I want him to succeed with us.

I think these are some of the more sensible things I've heard about Corey Patterson.

Tribune articles are pretty clear--including right from Hendry--that Patterson is finished here. Thank goodness.

Hendry is also quoted as already thinking about Pie for 2006, which I think is a terrible idea, but he cites as support the jump from AA to the bigs that many players are making anymore. He is obviously smitten with Murton, and cited him specifically as an example of making the jump. But he was also thinking of Francouer since he mentioned Atlanta, and we all remember Cabrera from 2003.

Another good thing? It sure sounds like Hendry intends for both Murton and Cedeno to be starters for 2006. Allowing him to spend his $100MM budget (that number was specifically mentioned) on "a leadoff hitting shortstop (Furcal!), a power-hitting corner OF (Giles!), and a 200 inning starting pitcher (Millwood, Burnett and Morris were mentioned)." No mention of Walker, so looks like I was right there, he's gone.

But for the specific topic here, say goodbye to K. Patt, and IMO, good riddance. What a bust.

Corey is likely finished as a Cub and should be. For one thing, he seems to be uncoachable within the Cub's organization. No one has gotten through. He continues with the same failed approach over and over.

Also, I think the fan base and organization both question his committment to the game. Tonight, failing to run out a strikeout when the ball goes to the wall is inexcusable and an example of spacing out. His lack of desire to play winter ball when his game has collapsed and needs work desperately shows little committment.

Corey will continue to be booed at Wrigley. This won't help either. He needs to be gone.

At the risk of extending this discussion, I will add that I wouldn't be surprised if Patterson started next season with the Cubs. This buys some much needed time for Pie and gives him one last chance to at least improve his value.

Trading this winter would be tantamount to giving him away. If they're resigned to giving him away than why not bring him back for ST and see what happens? They can always release him. They'd get nothing but that's not much different than what they'd get for him this winter.

In theory, that's not a bad idea. But , what the Cubs need to think of though is the $ angle as well. Corey's not cheap. He's in his arbitration years and I'm not exactly sure how the $ works, but I believe they need to offer him more than he made this year (which he obviously won't deserve). I just don't believe he's worth tying up $3-4MM for a guy who we hope can build back up his trade value so we can trade him later in the season to make room for Pie.

I'd be surprised if Patterson is in Chicago next year. I envision his future will look like Choi's current state - fighting for a full-time job somewhere forever tagged with the "potential not realized" tag.

And I still remember when people laughed at my strong desire to trade Patterson to the Royals years ago for Beltran, because Patterson was going to better than Beltran (at least that was the argument). Curse that knee injury!

Watching the same thing and thought...mmm didn't stoney do that for the year he had off? Maybe Baker would Corey to Stoney. I am sure he'd give the Cubs a discount.

Because Baker and Stone are such good pals?

Enough with Corey stuff. It is neither witty or cute. In fact, it is pretty childish.

Kind of like message board policing, which is both childish and stupid. Aren't there some spelling errors and typos somewhere you can get excited about next?

There are filters in place to change the spelling for a reason. Tim has it in place. By trying to beat the system, it shows a disrespect for the board and its policies as far as I am corcerned.

I think you've done quite enough in your time here to raise the level of discussion on this board. That comment was beneath you. Or may be it wasn't? I'll let others decide.

CubinNY is right. The board has a policy about such "nicknames" for Cubs. because you CAN skirt the software controls doesn't make it alright. Tim is doing a great job building this into the absolute BEST Cubs forum on the net, and we're seeing the results with various Cubs and staff in chats and such on this site. Insulting players unconstructively with little nicknames does nothing to further that effort, and in fact only hurts it. The maturity of the baseball discussions is what separates this board from the crap on other sites.

So without attacking the poster or anything- let's just try to keep our level of baseball discussion higher than those other sites- it's what separates us from the riff-raff!

In all do respect, what's the difference between saying Corey or Sammy Soso?( not allowed on this site) compared to name calling & insulting Dusty,Neifi & Macias? Moron, stupid & idiot has been used on many occasions.(allowed on this site). Answer: there is no difference, there is just a bias.

It doesn't make any difference to me, just pointing out the facts.

TBCF:

I think the difference is in the context most of the time. If someone is calling a move or decision stupid, idiotic, or whatever, it's one thing. If they use the adjectives in the midst of a larger statement, it's borderline. If it's used in an ad hominem style then it's over the line.

I think personally that the people here are good enough and smart enough to refrain from just insulting or demeaning players with silly nicknames or derisive nicknames. A simple "Corey sucked this year" does the job just as well.

*edit* all best are off in the Rants section, though.
