Blanton is a better choice as well, did sizemore play too much last year to qualify? I still would go with Street though.

Oh come on. Let's be honest here, as Ryno is.

Pujols deserves the MVP more. It's pretty simple. Cardinals = playoffs because of Pujols this year. Cubs = nowhere. I love Derrek and his year, but Pujols deserves it this year, especially with all the injuries the Cardinals had.

Jonny Gomes says hi:

.282/.373/.535/.908, 61 R, 21 HR, and 54 RBI in 344 ABs.

So, if the Cards had Lee at first instead of Pujols would they be sitting at home in October?

No. If Lee played for the Cards, he'd probably be the MVP.

But the Cubs would have gotten the same ultimate result with Scott Hatteberg playing first base as they did with Derrek Lee. So Lee's "value" is diminished, somewhat.

I find that statement bogus. His value isn't diminished, the team just didn't utilize his value. Is the value of a Monet diminshed if some art collector hides it in his attic, or does it have the same value whether that value is utilized for its greatest affect.

My lawn mower still has the same value whether I use it or not. Just because I'm foolish to own a mower and still pay someone to mow the lawn doesn't diminish the value of the mower I own.

I don't necessarily disagree with that premise. I'm not saying that Hatteberg is as valuable as Lee. I guess the point I'm trying to make is that when the MVP race is extremely close (which it is), then it makes more sense to give it to the player on the playoff team, which is basically the same point that Ryno was making.

It was close, but not that close. Add in DLee's defence where is advantage his much greater and he's clearly the more valuable player.

As I posted this morning in another thread:

The three leading contenders seem to be Lee, Pujols, and A. Jones. Here's how they stack up.

Batting Average

1. Derrek Lee: 335

2. Albert Pujols: 330

3. Andruw Jones: 263

On Base %

1. Pujols: 430

2. Lee: 418

3. Jones: 347

Slugging %

1. Lee: 662

2. Pujols: 609

3. Jones: 575

OPS

1. Lee: 1080

2. Pujols: 1039

3. Jones: 922

Home runs

1. Jones: 51

2. Lee: 46

3. Pujols: 41

RBI

1. Jones: 128

2. Pujols: 117

3. Lee: 107

XBH

1. Lee: 99

2. Pujols: 81

3. Jones: 78

Runs Created

1. Lee: 144

2. Pujols: 142

3. Jones: 90

Win Shares

1 (tie) Lee: 36

Pujols: 36

3. Jones: 24

What is clearly evident is that Jones belongs no where in the discussion. His numbers in nearly every stat pale to Lee and Pujols. Where Lee and Pujols lead the league in Win Shares, Jones doesn't even crack the top ten.

Lee seems to have a very slight edge in the stats. The question is whether playing on a winning team should have any value and if so, how much value?

I'd give the MVP to Lee. He leads in OPS and runs created. On the other hand, I fully expect the BWAA to hand the award to Pujols.

I think that the numbers indicate that Lee was the more valuable player.

It wasn't that close? As of Sept. 21, the two were dead even in Win Shares (which takes defense into account). Lee was slightly ahead in VORP, as of the last update, but Pujols had a very good weekend, so that will be extremely close, also.

Which numbers are you using to determine that it wasn't that close?

Posted

Batting runs above average and fielding runs above average.

Lee:

BRAA: 74

FRAA: 14

Net: 88

Pujols:

BRAA: 71

FRAA: 2

Net: 73

OK.

So that's what you use to determine that the MVP race "isn't that close"?

Seems like a pretty narrow standard.

That's what I use to determine that the performance of the team shouldn't be factored in, yes.

I have no problem with Pujols winning the MVP award, but that Andruw is even considered in the same breath as Derrek and Albert? Geez.

I agree. Likewise, I wouldn't have a problem with Lee winning. He seems like a good guy, and has had a terrific season. As long as Andruw doesn't win, I'm cool with the other two guys.

No way man. Listen to Stuart Scott.

Balls Deep (Lewisburg): With all the hype that Andruw Jones is getting for keeping the Braves in first, is it possible that Albert Pujols will be overlooked again this year for the MVP award? It seems he's going to get punished because his team has run away with the division.

It's not just possible, it's probable. But I don't think Albert's getting punished for what his team does. His timing is just a little off. At the beginning of Albert's career, Barry Bonds busted out. Now Albert's having another great year, but Andruw Jones is having an extra-great year. Andruw has carried his team. He deserves it.
