Manager Frank Robinson, who is as old-school as it gets, has shut down his starters for the remainder of the year, even though their play could impact the wild card race. According to Sportsline,

3B Vinny Castilla, C Brian Schneider, OF Jose Guillen, 1B Nick Johnson, OF Brad Wilkerson, plus closer Chad Cordero, will sit out all or most of the rest of the season, manager Frank Robinson said. 2B Jose Vidro already was limited mainly to pinch-hitting in September. "There comes a time -- and this is the time, as far as I'm concerned -- that ... it's time to say, 'Hey, guys, that's it. Take the rest of the year off,"' Robinson said.

Imagine that. And he's giving the rookies and kids a chance to play.

huh.

Yeah but those guys don't compare to gamers like Macias and NEIFI~!

There's old school and then there's Dusty. Frank Robinson is old school. Joe Morgan is old school. Whitey Herzog was old school. Dusty is... well, Dusty.

Sometimes you just have to accept the fact that there are people who just don't operate on the same plane of existence as the rest of us. ;)

"This is judgment time for who's going to be playing next year too," Baker said. "You're not only playing for now. You're playing for 2006 as well."

So clearly, playing rookies would be pointless.

That quote makes no sense. Why didn't the beat reporters ask a follow up? He contradicted himself in the same sentence!

Is he also shutting down the starting rotation to give them a break?

Egads I hope not. I've got Patterson & Livan in my fantasy rotation for the championship this week against abuck.

Posted

I'm hoping he sits Livan. I'm also in a championship and I'm running low on innings to use...

I've still got Johan and Peavy for one more start, and I need some cash.

Sitting Cordero is huge for me.

Sitting Cordero is huge for me.

I've got Cordero on my staff, too. :(

Basically, I figured RFK would be idyllic for pitchers and stocked up.

I like Livan, but the lack of K's, lack of CG's (this season), and terrible WHIP have been a sort of nuisance all season long.

Pulling in a solid ERA and wins though.

I don't play in a rotisserie league, though. I play in a points league that highly rewards quality starts & innings pitched. Livan's great and he's about the most predictable pitcher in MLB the past few years.

Well, I just lost Burnett, too. :(

Maybe that's the reason Dusty likes Neifi and Macias so much - he has them on his fantasy squad as well.

I know we're upset that more young guys aren't playing, but I'd imagine there are plenty of people within the Astros organization and their fans who should be upset if Robinson pretty much throws in the towel considering they finish the season with the Phillies. I know, or I should say I hope, we Cub fans would be pissed if an opposition of a team we were battling for the playoffs threw in the towel.

Yes, but we can level the playing field by throwing in the towel against the Astros... :D

First off, are they really throwing in the towel by playing Zimmerman and Church instead of Castilla and Guillen?

Second, no, I wouldn't be pissed in your example. Each team has to do what is best for them. If that means playing youngsters to get ready for the following year, then so be it. IIRC, we were playing Cincy a lot down the stretch in 2003 and they were playing a whole bunch of kids. I don't remember anyone around here complaining about that!

Good point.

But I'm stubborn, there's no way I want to be a team that had two teams clinch a playoff berth against. It's bad enough to have a team clinch against you, but add to that it was the Cardinals and now possibly the Astros? No thanks.

To your first question, no. But I read that to mean pretty much all the starters would sit, including the pitchers, which was never definitively stated one way or the other.

To the second point, yes. And there would be plenty of people on here upset (including me) if we were battling the Phillies for the wild card (especially if we were a game or two behind) and the Nationals weren't trotting out anything remotely resemebling their best possible lineup.

IMO the Cubs are in a different situation. I agree with Dal that I'd be upset if a team started a bunch of rookies and shut down the regulars but...the Cubs have had the opportunity to play the young guys due to injury and yet still do not. The every inning of every game played by Perez and Macias is what really bothers me.

I'm curious if Raush being in the rotation is a way of trying to get him to come back next year. If the Cubs did not want him back why not let a kid start? Yeah, the 500 thing but I really think there is more to it then that.

I don't understand sitting all of those players at the same time. I understand giving rookies a chance, but at least mix them in or substitute them in during the game.

Who cares if others are upset? The Cubs aren't in the business of making Philly fans happy. The only concern is the good of the Cubs. There should not be one smidgen of thought put into how other fans or teams will react.
