If we get Giles do we have to give up our 1st round pick and a sandwich (as a type A)? IIRC, that's what would happen.

Ah, this year's class sucks anyway. Welcome to Chicago, Mr. Giles.

No, our first rounder is protected.

what rule makes it protected? :?

that puts a fuzzy feeling in my heart though. :D

The top 15 picks are protected from being lost to FA compensation.

Thanks.

So if we acquire a type A FA, then the team we deal with only gets the sandwich pick? :)

I'm not sure if it's just the sandwich pick or the sandwich pick + our 2nd rounder. Someone else knows for sure.

They get our second round pick + a supplemental first rounder (not from us, the pick just gets stuck in there between the rounds).

They might get our 2nd or 3rd rounder too. Those aren't protected.

Patterson asked to bat leadoff and Dusty gave him the opportunity to prove himself. I wish he would have kept him @ 6 or 7, but w/ Nomar & Walker hurt, it was worth the gamble.

...everything I heard said the exact opposite about him "asking" to bat leadoff.

Let's set the record straight...

Dusty asked Corey to consider batting leadoff

Corey considered it, and got back to Dusty after about three weeks or so, saying he'd be willing to give leadoff a shot

Dusty, since it was his idea in the first place, consented, and inserted Corey atop the lineup

Both will cost about the same in money and will produce similar numbers but only one will cost the Cubs a lot in players.

Even though Abreu is three years younger, I still think Giles' production will be similar to Abreu's over the next several seasons. This one shouldn't be as close as it is. Giles...easily.

And, if both were an option, I'd pick it. We aren't discussing what we think will happen, we're discussing what our plan of attack should be. If there is a way for the Cubs to acquire Abreu by trading Murton and others without breaking the bank (Pie), I'd do it in a heartbeat. Wouldn't you?

Giles in left, Patterson in center and Abreu in right. Let Patterson bat 8th until he figures it out. And if he never does, who cares?

what about vernon wells as an outfielder...i wonder if he could be had in a trade?

Pass. Wells' numbers are not that good.

Think a slightly better, right handed patterson with little to offer on the basepaths

I thought there was some news I hadn't heard..

If we signed Giles, that would be a real test of Tim's new server. The place would go nuts.

I had and outfield fantasy this morning of LF-Manny CF-Beltran RF-Vlad..Imagine that one..

You sound like Costanza trying to get Griffey and Bonds together in the Yankee outfield.

With all the various topics and happenings in this thread, it is a serious barrier to entry for anybody that wasn't in on the discussion from the beggining. Just thought I'd mention.

Hmm...Macias or Perez being re-signed or Giles I wonder which would light up the new server more?

I'd love to see Hendry pull a major OF trade off while everyone else is talking to the free agents.

I would take Wells in a heartbeat. Especially with someone else on the corner like Giles, Huff, Dunn, Manny or whoever we could get in a trade. His numbers aren't good compared to his steller 03 season but that would be hard to reproduce unless your a top tier player. I think he gets a bad rap on this board, I guess because of his average OBP.

A .269 avg with a .320 OBP at his salary isn't worth trading for.

Of course, that's the idea, to acquire a "top tier" player this off season, or any off season for that matter. The only top tier free agent OFer this season is...you guessed it, Brian Giles. There are others to be had via trade, but they would come at a high player cost whereas Giles will just cost dollars, and dollars the Cubs have.

So, why bother with Wells as a first choice?
