EDIT: You've been clamoring for the Cubs to cut Patterson because of his performance this year, even though he has been fairly good for a CF in the past. Why does the opposite hold true for Pierre?

Patterson has been fairly good for a CF in the past?? LOL!!! He's had one fluke six week stretch of good baseball in a 5-year career.

The opposite holds true for Pierre because already in his career--he came up to the big leagues the same time as Patterson! (2000)--he has three times put more than 200 hits up in a year, three times put an OBP of 360 or better on the board out of the leadoff spot, and EVERY year (including this one) put 45 or more SBs on the board. He had an off year. The evidence suggests he's capable of much more, unlike Patterson.

Kess, I do not often agree with you, but if the choice is between CPatt and Pierre, give me Pierre every day and twice on Sunday.

That isn't what I was saying. Offensively, Pierre and Patterson have been nearly equivalent the past 2 years. Patterson was better(albeit for a shorter time) in '03, and Pierre was slightly better in '04. Now both have done TERRIBLY this season. Why are we clamoring to trade for one to hit leadoff, and trying to cut the other at all costs?

Unless you're taking their slugging percentage into consideration (which I don't see the point because Pierre is a leadoff hitter) then Pierre CLEARLY had the better 2003. He had a higher average (.305 to .298) and a higher OBP (.361 to .329).

Pierre was far more than "slightly" better than Corey last year. Corey (AVG/OBP): .266/.320. Pierre: .326/.374

And I'd hardly say that Pierre has been terrible this season, especially if terrible is the word used to describe Corey's season. Pierre's batting average is higher than Corey's OBP. To me, there's no question that Pierre a much much better player. And it's not even close.

Why is SLG a bad thing in a leadoff hitter? Why aren't we allowed to count Corey's best asset in 2003 (and the biggest asset of his batting position, the 3 slot)?

It's certainly not a bad thing. To me, it's just a bonus. But Corey's superb slugging percent for half of a season hardly makes him near the player that Pierre is.

WARP1- Wins above replacement player

2003

Pierre: 4.2 in 746 PA's

Patterson: 2.9 in 347 PA's

Patterson was better, although he got hurt so he may not have kept it up.

2004

Pierre: 5.0 in 748 PA's

Patterson: 4.8 in 687 PA's

Again Patterson fares better when PT is equal(Pierre's extra PA's are due to him being a leadoff hitter). Now WARP1 takes into account fielding as well, so Patterson's clear advantage there may skew that a little, but Pierre is most certainly not clearly better offensively. And again, both are coming off terrible seasons, so neither should be a primary option for CF next season. If we want to put either in there, neither should be at the top of the order, and we should've upgraded both corner OF spots and SS.

I don't need a WARP1 statistic to tell me who the better player between Patterson and Pierre is.

I'm not advocating that we go out and acquire Pierre, but if we do, it'd be an upgrade. No question.

I am no Juan Pierre fan by any means, but I'd agree with you. At this point if Corey gives us anything beyond a trading chip in 2006 and beyond we're lucky.

Corey may need a break from baseball, and may end up being a productive big leaguer, but it's hard for me to justify weighing his 1/2 season that was good more than the other 1500 AB's in the other 3 ML seasons.

Hopefully LA signs Nomar and put him LF or 3b. They can deal w/ his "fluke" injuries. I recall that Nomar was a workout maniac when he first entered the league. He has a lot of wear and tear on his body. Wouldn't be surprised if he was taking an "enhancer" too, which doesn't do the body good in the long run.

I'll be shocked if he plays more than 100 games next year.
