Out of the guys above: Hank White

Out of the Cubs roster: Lee or Walker

(Todd walks alot and when the bases are loaded for him I always remember the 4th of July when he took ball 4 with then loaded against the ChiSox)

Jose. More likely than corey or neifi to put the ball in play with about the same average. Blanco has a better obp than jose but i dont plan on winning the game with a walk.

Wouldn't you want the walk so that you get to the better hitter at the top of the order?

A walk would win the game in this scenario so i neednt worry about that. I guess im also assuming im facing a top notch reliever in this situation, therefore hes probably good enough to throw strikes and im not likely to get a walk. If the pitchers remaining in the pen or the mound has a bad walk rate id put in blanco.

I'll go ahead and be the one that says Corey. He's certainly the most talented hitter out of that group, even if he has struggled this season.

And I'd certainly want him at that plate out of that group if an extra base would be required to drive in the winning run.

Corey would be last of my options and heres why. In this situation an extra base hit is worthless all i need is a single or walk. Of this group corey clearly has the most knack for a extra base hit but i dont need it here, the game is tied and all i need is one run. Of the 4 players listed im going to go into extra innings 7 out of 10 times, not good. Id rather have corey as a man to lead off an inning and better utilize his power and or speed. Or i could use him as pinch runner later in the game to steal a base and score from second on a hit ala dave roberts. Corey is most likely to hit a homer in pinch hit situation but again i dont need that here. Ill get fried in the press room by not using him but that ok.

What you need is for someone to simply not make an out. That likelyhood, of course, is simply the same thing as OBP. I don't care if it is a walk, hbp, hit or even catcher interference. All I care about is the batter getting through their PA with no out being recorded:

Career OBP:

Corey - .294

Neifi - .301 (inflated by coors)

Macias - .299

Blanco - .288

Last 3 yrs (2002-2004, as espn doesn't list 3yr splits including 2005)

Corey - .308

Neifi - .278

Macias - .286

Blanco - .261

Obviously, none of them are great choices. But I'll take my chances with Corey instead of the other three.

I took Corey too because quite frankly hes way better than any of the hitters there even though hes struggled this year. Macias and perez are a joke Blanco is a back up catcher for a reason.
