Yeah, Rusch was fading badly in the last few starts before he was removed from the rotation and stank in his first couple back in it. I'm not sure if he would have won more than 1 or 2 more games if he had been in the rotation the whole time.

IMO, the Cubs really should have traded him in July, when he had some real value to a team desperate for a LH starter. A real missed boat.

I thought the same thing. But, the Cubs made sure Rusch's value was at an all time low at the trade deadline, therefore reducing his value to "unwanted".

Just out of curiosity, who needs a SS or 2nd base badly enough to start Perez?

Please don't answer the Cubs.

Cards.

If Neifi goes to the Cards and does well, I may lose hope and interest in the game of baseball.

:-k

Are we talking about the same Nefti Perez who couldn't hit in COORS FIELD?

For whatever reason, Rusch just seems to be one of those pitchers whose results just don't match up to his peripheral stats.

What peripheral stats would those be? Outside of 2004 and 2000 he has not had good peripherals

His K/BB ratio and his HR allowed rate. Judging by those stats he's almost always pitched like guys who have an ERA in the mid threes.

"I want to come back,'' said Perez, who will be a free agent. "But my body tells me I can play every day, and I might be looking for a starting job.''

Your body is lying to you. Never listen to your body.

Mi mind's telling me noooooooooo

but my BODY

I'll be very happy for Neifi if he can turn this season into a starting job with another team, especially if it's the Cardinals

Of course, then we get to see Neifi put up a .320/.380/.420/.800 line next year....

If Neifi leaves we can plan on seeing an awful lot of Rich Aurilia in the Cubs' line-up next season. He's a free agent and one of Dusty's boys. Count on it.

So it just keeps on getting better, eh?

Freaking hysterical. Everyone around my area wants to know what is so funny. I don't think I can properly explain it.

Dusty bends over backwards to "reward" Neifi with playing time at the expense of Cedeno, now Neifi says he'll leave unless he starts next year. What a tool. It's great to have a manager who's more loyal to scumbag veterans than he is to the Chicago Cubs.

Can someone please whisper in Jose Macias' ear that HIS body is telling him he can be a starter elsewhere, too? C'mon, let's all put in a call to Jose's agent and convince him he should reject all overtures from the Cubs next year.

Hold out for the Red Sox Jose, they want you!!

Looks like the Rockies have interest in bringing Neifi back to Colorado. From the Rocky Mountain News:

REUNION PLANS? Right-hander Pedro Astacio and infielder Neifi Perez, both former Rockies, are on the list of players the team has interest in signing this off-season.

Perez would project as a super utility player, although it wouldn't be a surprise if he won the second base job. Astacio would fill the need for a veteran who could provide rotation depth.

Here's hoping that the Rockies give Neifi an offer that he can't refuse.

Rotoworld speculates that the Yankees might have interest in him as well.

I'll buy his plane ticket.

It's a shame that because we have such a truly dreadful manager, we can't bring back a very valuable infield backup.

Fire Crusty!

Signing Neifi to play 2B could make some sense for the Yankees, if they follow through on another rumour heard last week, which was dealing Robinson Cano to the Twins for Torii Hunter.

Wow, FINALLY some good offseason news! Thanks for passing it on..

Now, let's just hope it's an offer he can't refuse.

We just might get a decent draft pick back for Rusch. If they use the last two years to rate FAs and what round draft pick a team gets as compensation, his performance last year should really help his value. If I'm Hendry, I'd tell him upfront that he's going to the pen if he comes back, then offer him arbitration. If he really wants to start, he'll turn it down, and we'll get a draft pick out of him.

I wonder about this. Last year, coming off his good season, Rusch was classfieid by the Elias system as a *starting pitcher*, not a reliever. And he did *not* make class B, he only made class C which does not bring any compensation picks. I'm not sure exactly how they decide how to classify a guy: over 03-04, he'd appeared in a few more games in rotation than relief. Over 04-05, he may be now eligible for the relief class, since he appeared in more relief games this year. By innings, of course, he's got lots more rotation innings.

Elias normally takes the previous two seasons. Given how bad his 2003 was, peerhaps even if he's in the rotation pool this year his 04-05 combo is improved enough relative to 03-04 that he'll now make class B. In the relief ranks, he's got a limited number of appearances, but a lot of innings, and his 2-year ERA of around 4.0 would fair quite well among relievers.

But you still have to offer arbitration, and I'm not sure I'm willing to risk paying Rusch $4-5m just for the chance to get another 2nd round pick. This organization hasn't exactly lit the world on fire with their draft picks anyway.
