Can someone with more knowledge of the proper stats tell me how many more/less runs the White Sox would have scored this year with Carlos Lee in the lineup instead of Scott Podsednik? To be fair take it up to the day Podsednik went on the d.l. and if need be just place Lee at the leadoff spot (assuming thats where Podsednik hits).

The trade had more to do with freeing salary. Obviously, it's a steal for the Brew Crew but it let us get El Duque, a true fifth starter, and AJP and Iguchi. Lee>>>>>>Podsednik. El Duque, AJP, Iguchi, Pods>>>>Lee

What if they kept Lee, forgot about El Duque, and just stuck McCarthy in the rotation?

I dont think it was all about money, the White Sox needed a leadoff type hitter that could steal some bases and the Brewers needed a big bat so the trade worked out well for both teams. They both got what they wanted out of the trade.

Isn't the Cell one of the easiest parks to homer in? I'd say the White Sox would have been much better off with Lee. They'd probably have a better chance of going deep in the playoffs if they had Lee in LF rather than Podsednik. Iguchi is capable of leading off.

That doesn't make sense. Lee makes 8 million. Podsednik, El Duque, AJP, and Iguchi make around 12.5 million.

EDIT: I got El Duque and Contreras confused. The combination makes around 8.5 million.

I disagree Posednik has been the key to the team in my opinion and the team has really started to slide since he has been hurt. Pitching has obviously carried them, but Posednik is the type of player that Guillen loves and I think he has helped their team more then Lee would have.

Getting Pods might have allowed/helped Guillen change the overall attitude of the team. Playing small ball seemed to have worked for them. Statitstically, it definitely looks like Lee would have been the better option.

They've scored fewer runs this year. They won so many games because they have the best pitching in the game this year.

This is the exact reason why i want to know. My Sox fan friend tells me how important Podsednik is/how great he is for "Ozzieball" (his words) etc... Then i remind him that the player they gave up for him is three times the player Scott Pod will ever be. I'm not real familiar with VORP or what it explains but if someone can tell me how i could possibly translate that into wins/runs scored for a team that'd be appreciated. If it can't be without some time consuming process i'd be more than happy with just an explanation of vorp so i can shove that down this guys throat.

I am not debating that they are scoring more runs with Pods, I just think that his benefit to the team might go a little beyond statistics. The team is definitely better because of the improved pitching. I think that if you have good pitching, you can win a lot of games with small ball, because you score runs more consistently (albeit fewer in total). It is hard to argue statistically, Pods has been more valuable. If the whole team bought into playing with a small ball approach and it was working, then I think that Pods might be a little more valuable than the stats might show.

Could someone explain VORP to me.

It stands for Value Over Replacement Player and represents the number of runs the player in question contributes beyond what a replacement-level player would contribute if given the same percentage of team plate appearances. It is park adjusted and does not factor in defense.

Also, Lee is pretty hated among the players. He was more of an egotistical jerk than Frank was in his a-hole prime.

According to the smear campaign by the Sox after he was dealt.

I think the Brewers got the better end of the deal. They got the power they were looking for, and they also managed to dump a sucky reliever on the White Sox.

My dad (a brewer fan) was so mad when they made that trade because of Lee's reputation as a selfish jerk and the intangables that pods brought. I don't like intangables. Also, ironically enough, he was upset because the backend of the bullpen (kolb and vizcaino) was traded away. I know earlier in the year they had one of the better (albeit comprised of unknowns) bullpens in the league.

I was pissed by that trade as well. Carlos Lee is a Cubs Killer and he showed us this year he's the ultimate killer, as he took out Todd Walker.
