I think this deserves its own thread. They are down 5-0 to the Mariners in the 4th inning and are on their way to their 18th straight loss. Can they break the '88 Orioles record of 22? This team looks godawful right now, almost as bad as the Cubs have looked at stretches this year.

I'd hoped that the Royals might turn it around a bit once Buddy Bell took over, but they truly are an awful team. I don't think anyone saw this coming after the adequate 2003 they had.

18 losses in a row is an absurd streak. I'd think that in some game during that stretch they'd just, y'know, luck into a win.

My favorite sports team; Chicago Cubs. My second-favorite sports team: KC Royals. I'm pretty sure that's conclusive proof that I'm hated by whatever higher powers exist in this uinverse.

I said this in an earlier thread, I'm the same way. Live in Kansas, but Cubs were always my favorite, but the Royals were a distant second.

You really have to try to suck that bad.

Trust me, I seen them play in person and TV multiple times, and they are, indeed, bad. But hey, that's what we get for having a cheap-assed owner.

By the way, that is a AL record UMF. The NL (& MLB) record is 24 by the 1899 Cleveland team, who lost 24 straight.

Allard Baird got the dreaded "vote of confidence" in the KC Star awhile back from Daddy Wal-Mart. I can't wait to hear Baird spin this season. He'll probably talk about how he admires the team's "consistency."

Daddy Wal-Mart needs to do one of the following:

1) Can the entire Front Office/Scouting Dept and start over.

2) Sell the team to somebody competent.

3) Contract and turn Kauffman into a skateboard park.

I've been to at least one Royals game every year since they've existed. This is worse than the Chiefs losing bender in the late 1970's & early 1980's (if that's possible). One ray of hope: In KC, when one team has been wretched, the other has been great. The worse the Royals are this year, the better it bodes for the Chiefs.

Since the last time the Royals won, which was July 27th. During this time frame that the Royals are on a losing streak:

7 million babies were born.

Gas prices from $2.29, went up to $2.55.

Owens threatened to hold out, reported to camp, thrown out of camp, and re-reported to camp again.

Also, John Kruk gained 10 pounds.

there is always something worse than being a Cubs fan.

I wouldn't even know how to fix that team. They are comitted to youth and building internally, which has worked for Cleveland, but if they had any budget at all, they could make a quicker turnaround (a la Detroit) by supplementing the team with some proven vets.

KC is a perfect example of why MLB should have a minimum cap. You have to spend X amount every year in payroll. Don't like it, sell the team to someone that will put a better product on the field.

And I think if we ever see an MLB salary cap in our lifetimes, there will have to be a salary floor included.

The problem is that they have one of the worst farm systems in baseball. In their preseason rankings, BA says only Detroit and St. Louis are worse.

Tim Kurjch....whatever...said on BT that they only have 3 everyday players on their roster. That is absolutely mind boggeling. Even with a couple signings, they still are in deep trouble.

Just curious, but could MLB cut a team if they felt the owners were seriously not trying to win?

I very much doubt it, as that would be the loss of 25 jobs. The union would have a fit.

They've tried contraction before. I wouldn't be surprised if they tried it again.

MLB can cut two teams after the 2006 season without the approval of the MLBPA. Part of the last CBA. I doubt it happens, though, as the owners have to notify the players of any contractions prior to the expiration of the current agreement. That means if the owners decide to contract two teams, you can bet the farm that the players will make managment's life a living hell when negotiations over the new CBA start.

If they contracted KC do you think they'd have an expansion team in the AL in a few years time in a better market (Northern VA, Portland, Vegas, etc)?

I didn't know that, but I agree with your point. The Union would NOT negotiate in good faith if the owners contracted.

KC really isn't a bad market when the team is managed correctly. (Even when it isn't; the Royals still routinely outdraw the Marlins.) You may be surprised to learn that the franchise also had the highest payroll in baseball as recently as the early '90s. They're in a rough spot now, but if/when management ever gets its act together it's a pretty good location for a franchise. I don't think the Royals are a good candidate for contraction, just as I wouldn't have contracted the woefully inept Cubs franchise of the mid-late 70s.

The Florida franchises, on the other hand...
