It appears Jerry Hairston will be activated day after tomorrow, Friday. What will Hendry/Baker do to get him on the 25 man roster?

(1) Send Matt Murton to the minors.

(2) Send Todd Wellemeyer to the minors (go to 11 pitchers).

(3) Trade a player who has cleared waivers, like Todd Hollandsworth or Todd Walker.

(4) Designate a player for assignment.

(5) Put a player on the DL.

(6) Other

I would send Wellemeyer out.

I expect the Cubs to return Murton to the minors. This will be justified by the fact that Macias is hitting near .300 and, along with Hairston, can serve just as well as the right-handed platoon members in LF.

I would (6) release Jose Macias. I think the Cubs will (b) send Wellemeyer to the minors.

I think Welly gets sent down. We're 5 months into the season. I'd say it's about time to go down to 11 pitchers.

Maybe we'll see a trade come Friday though. :-k

Knowing the Cubs they will send Murton to the minors to let Hollandsworth work on his swing for the post season. I mean, they can re-call Matt in 3 weeks anyways... makes perfect sense.

The cubs will Send down either Murton or Welly.

Hey, this is the Cubs.

I think it'll be Wellemeyer.

Sounds like Walker might not be here next season.

Mark Loretta, anyone? I had looked him up and found that he's a FA after this season. Only two years older, durable, leadoff caliber with the bat, decent fielding 2B.

I'd trade/ release Hollandsworth.

Demoting Wellemeyer makes too much sense.

The Cubs will demote Murton. Hairston platoons with Lawton, making the lineup vs. LH starters look like this:

LF Hairston

2nd Neifi F. Perez

Lee

Ramirez

Nomar

Barrett

Burnitz/ Macias

Patterson

Lawton and Walker against RH pitchers.

Where's that coming from? I know his option isn't likely to vest, but I figured at the price of the team option, he'd be a lock to return.

The way I see it he cleared waivers, his option won't vest, he's getting older, and we also have Hairston.

I'd trade Mulletsworth as my first choice, demote Wellemeyer as my 2nd. Not because I care about Wellemeyer, he's proved at this point he is simply incapable of consistently throwing strikes. But at least he's young, maybe some team will want him in the offseason.

I may be in the minority here, but Hairston hasn't shown me anything great really, maybe with more constant playtime he will come around, could just be me in general hehe.

Agreed. Hairston hasn't done much of anything to blow my skirt up. He has zero power, little patience (I know he's got a decent OBP, but isn't a lot of that due to a ridiculously high HBP rate?), and a much worse glove than I could have ever expected. I'd MUCH prefer Walker full-time at 2B next season.

The Padres have an option on him that vests in ~30 or so plate appearances. I like him too, and he's just as versatile as Macias in the field. I doubt the Pads would trade him...

Why would a team that is 5 games below 500 even consider sending down Murton in mid-Aug. Any team that has any kind of sense would be trying to rid themselves of Hollandworth and Macias and would have given the starting job over to Murton already. Another example of why the Cubs are a losing organization. They even suck at losing

Here is who the Cubs face in the last two weeks of August per the current rotations:

19 - Kim ®

20 - Cook ®

21 - Francis (L)

22 - Hudson ®

23 - Thompson ®

24 - Hampton (L)

26 - Vargas (L)

27 - Willis (L)

28 - Beckett ®

29 - Penny ®

30 - Houlton ®

31 - Lowe ®

The way things have been going, that'll be 4 lost starts for Murton. Hopefully Wellemeyer is sent back.

Why is corey patterson all of a sudden a lock in center field?....the guy hasn't changed his swing very much..before .232/.379/.270 through 8 games .236/.388/.274 , the other night he struck out on a fastball at his head and a ball in the dirt to andy pettite, patterson should platoon with hairston

Most likely they will keep Welly because Dusty will want to go into Coors field with 12 pitchers.

yeah but with Williams available in the bullpen isn't Wellemeyer a little redundant?
