Can anyone remember a year when more name players (whether they deserve that designation or not) have been DFA'd? Are we seeing a new collective attitude from the teams in general when it comes to cutting ties with underachieving players? It sure seems like it.

Seems like it to me, too, and I like it! Wish there was some way ballclubs could relieve themselves of at least part of the burden of that player's salary should he be DFA'ed, like the NFL. Having to pay all minus the league minimum can be quite a pain at times.

Not sure to go about it, though.

He's got decent career numbers at Wrigley, Busch and MMP; also has decent career numbers against Houston and St. Louis. Could be a worthy number 5 starter (next year) if he doesn't cost much (salary). Probably best to take a pass on him, though.

This could take the discussion to an off-topic tanget, but: I think that's the problem with the NFL, not something that other sports should add. I think it's unfair to the teams and the players the way NFL contracts work (or the way I seem to think they work). It's the fact that the money's not guarenteed that leads to players holding out, which is an awful thing to happen in sports.

NFL contracts do have guaranteed money which usually is the bonus and then a base salary but nowhere near close the guaranteed money that baseball players have. Overall, better for the owner than it is for the players, but I also think some of the guaranteed money MLB has is ridiculous and can really hurt the team.

"The Cubs are still in the market for another starter and are expected to inquire about veteran left-hander Kirk Rueter, who was designated for assignment Sunday by the San Francisco Giants. The Giants have eight days to trade or release the 34-year-old who opened the season as their No. 2 starter. Rueter went 2-7 with a 5.95 ERA for the Giants. He was upset last month when they put him on the disabled list, citing gout in his right big toe as the cause.

When he was demoted to the bullpen last month, Rueter asked to be traded. Rueter has a solid history with Baker, who managed the Giants before coming to the Cubs and used Rueter as his Game 1 starter in the 1997 National League Division Series."

I saw that ealier and couldn't bring myself to post it. If nothing else, I just don't want Rueter so we can avoid the stupid story of Kirk's likeness to the Woody character from Toy Story. I think it was McCarver who wouldn't let that go during the World Series.

I don't mind a Kirk pickup.

Sure as hell beats the 4 and 5 guys we have now. You bring more experience to the staff, even though he may not be at his best, he could payoff later.

How does an ERA approaching six from an aging pitcher beat other options the Cubs have? Despite the fact that Hill's ERA is higher, I'd still rather see him in there getting the experience he needs. Further, at least for me, his last two bad outings don't dismiss the talent he has shown while with the Cubs overall.

And, yes, Rusch struggled last night. But, he isn't a lost cause. I give him credit for not making excuses, but I don't think its any great shock that he may need one start to get comfortable again in a starting role.

Maybe its a good opportunity to give Pinto a look?

Granted, these options aren't sure fire paths to 8 guaranteed wins out of that rotation spot for the rest of the year, but Rueter is hardly a better answer.

I sure wish we had a Felix Hernandez come into the league and throw K's.

Yeah, you and the fan of any team in baseball.

Two words. Angel Guzman....Hahaha ok maybe not :)

If I'm not mistaken, I think I just saw on the ESPN news scroll that Rueter was officially released tonight just 5 days into his designation for assignment. I guess the Giants realized that no team would trade for him, so why prolong the agony for 5 more days. Despite his poor numbers, there do seem to be some teams interested. I heard the Angels name most prominently.

Bummer...I was hoping the Cubs would trade Murton, Pie and Cedeno for him.
