I have noticed some real hate being thrown Michael Barrett's way from 'baseball's best fans'.

Any of you folks know what's up with that?

Personally I have nothing against Barrett.

My only guesses would be that he seemed to be one that spoke out a lot against the announcers...even after that whole thing blew over this winter...He didn't seem to want to let it go.

And maybe the stuff with Oswalt last year has something to do with it to.

Don't know for sure just guessing

he's a Cub?

Thanks for your vast input, however, that's kind of weak. Not really what I was trying to find out.

I mean, if that's it, all the Cub players would receive that. No, I have observed that Barrett seems to get more, and I don't understand it.

Wasn't Barrett the one who said something along the lines of "I know nobody wants to see us in a postseason series. I know it," last year after the Cubs lost out on the wildcard?

Barrett just rubs me the wrong way because of how he handles himself in the media. I just thought he was too young and not good enough of a player to be speaking out against his teammates, downgrading other team's success last season (Houston, St. Louis), and I thought he handled himself poorly in the media after the Oswalt situation. I think he should take care of business on the field and star away from the press. Just my opinion.

Barrett is 28 now, you know. And he's been in the league since his cup of coffee in 98, getting into 122 games in 99, his age 22 season.

Catchers are supposed to be the field generals. The job they have necessitates a deeper learning of the game than say, a left fielder. That's why you see more catchers go on to be above average managers.

As such, I believe that as a player with more than 5 years of service and being put in a natural leadership position as a catcher... I honestly believe he was well within his rights to speak out the way he did. He needs to be a leader of the team, and he was trying to assume that mantle, for better or worse.

Not trying to say your opinion is wrong or anything, just trying to state why I see the situation differently. It is an opinion after all, so it can't be wrong, per say.

are you saying you would have liked to see prior, wood, and zambrano in a best of 5 series?

Ok, so why would that make Cardinal fans dislike him?

I guess for the same reason most Cub fans hate Jim Edmonds. Barrett appears to be real cocky, and the whole stand off with Oswalt was stupid. The Cubs pitchers were plunking hitters left and right last year and Barrett gets upset because Oswalt did the same thing.

I have no feelings one way or the other. He seems like a good player.

Catchers should be the field leaders of a team, so I have no problem when a catcher stands up to the other team.

Also, wasn't that same game Zambrano was ejected for hitting Edmonds, Barrett was jawing at the Cards. It might not have been that game, but he definitely did it.

He was already mad at Oswalt, because of an incident of Oswalt beaning Vidro (when him and Barrett were teamates in Montreal, I also think it was a bad beaning like at his head or he got hurt pretty bad from it). I saw on BBTN a week or so ago where Oswalt has issues with Cliff Floyd, where Floyd hit a HR of him the next time Roy hit him, and than him again later, so Cliff said you do that again and there's going to be some problems, so the next time they face Cliff hit another home run .

In conclusion Roy Oswalt is an a-hole.

Is Zambrano an a-hole? Your discription sounds familiar to the action of Carlos yet he is loved by the Cubby faithful. I guess one guys a-hole is another guy favorite player.

Well, by that logic Matt Morris is an a-hole as well, and I ask you the same question.

Matt Morris hit someone after a homerun? I don't recall that. I remember him throwing behind someone during the bean ball wars of 2004. And if memory serves correct, I think the Cubs hit more Cardinal players than vise versa. In fact, I think the Cubs pitchers lead in that category last year.

Either way, I am not arguing that Morris, Oswalt, or Zambrano are a-holes. I just think it is funny that one person thinks Oswalt is an ahole because of an arument between he and two other players. With that logic, than anyone who gets in a fight must be an a-hole.

Cub pitchers have also been among the league leaders in walks the last two years. Perhaps there is something there. The Cubs throw fewer strikes and have more bouts of wildness, and the Cubs hit more people....hmmmmmmmmmm

PROBABLY MY BLUE SUNGLASSES, but I think Oswalt is a bigger offender. Because his issues with Floyd were over several games. The home run was in 1 game, and the 2 beanings were in 2 different games, so that spanned 3 games. Carlos hit Edmonds in one game, and hasn't done anything to him since then. Carlos is immature (he seems to be getting better, I think he's only thrown at one guy this year), the way I view Oswalt is he's just being a jerk. I think the Vidro thing caused Vidro to miss quite a bit of time. To my knowledge Carlos had never thrown at someones head and hasn't hurt anybody.

more on vidro

Throughout his career Vidro has played with a quiet determination- -sometimes too quiet. Last year a fastball from Houston Astros righthander Roy Oswalt hit Vidro in the batting helmet. He missed one game, then talked his way back into the lineup. Vidro played two more games, concealing his headaches and blurred vision, before admitting he was ailing. (His injury was eventually diagnosed as a mild concussion, which kept him out of the lineup for two weeks.)

To be honest, I can't remember why I started disliking him so much (can't point to one single thing that caused it). It always seemed like he has a punk attitude, but that is probably based on me being a Cardinal fan. I never was a big fan of his attempt at a goatie either. I think that Clement had better facial hair.

Thanks for the input!

My take, FWIW, on the Oswalt/Barrett incident.

I think it became pretty much common knowledge that Oswalt purposely hit Barrett last year. Generally, I don't think it's that big of a deal to have an HBP, as long as the pitcher is not throwing at the noggin. Barrett, however took exception to being thrown at. I didn't have a problem with him being pissed at Oswalt, and really, if he wanted to take it up with Oswalt, that's his prerogative, but I think he was wrong to interrupt the game to confront him the way he did.

He could have just asked the pitcher to hit Oswalt, and never said a word.

He could have confronted Oswalt off the field, or outside the game.

I thought that by doing that in the middle of the game like he did was bad form.

Something about Barrett seems to really egg the Cardinal fans. Some of the comments above shed a little light on that.
