Corey looked great today: 3 for 4 with a walk to boot! He hit a double off of a tough pitcher for lefties to hit. He looked patient at the plate. AND he made a tremendous outstretched diving catch in center. Way to go Corey!

I have a lot of faith in Corey yet. I hope he's our starting rightfielder next year (Pie in center)!

I asked in the game thread, but no one answered...The game wasnt on TV in my area, so could anyone fill me in on how Corey's swing/approach looked? Any different?

4 of 11 so far. 3 Ks, 1 BB.

Maybe the most encouraging stat: Only 2 times has Corey pulled the ball. One flyout and a double down the line. 2 of his 4 hits have come right back up the middle. 1 bunt hit. Fly out and a couple groundouts to the left side.

If Corey comes back to hit well the rest of the season, Pat Listach needs to be the hitting coach in Chicago.

Let's hope this is the start of his comeback. If nothing else it ought to help his morale.

And his trade value.

If Corey performs more toward the level that he is capable of, I see no reason to trade him. His upside still far outweighs the value we would get in return for Corey. Plus, our outfield defense would be tremendous with he and Pie roaming out there.

Corey looked very patient today, to answer someone's question. Today, he laid off both high pitches and pitches low and away. I was very encouraged by his approach today.

Plus that catch!

Exactly. I've come to grips with the fact that Corey Patterson will be traded and for someone without much value if he doesn't turn it around for the remainder of this season. But if he does start to hit again, there's no reason to trade him. His value to the Cubs (who need OF production in a major way) is much more than it would be in a trade.

I think the fact that everyone gets so excited when Corey has one good game says something about the type of player that he is.

I think he has a lot of potential, but it's never been realized for more than a few weeks at a time. And if people want to have Pie in center next year, we can't have Corey at a corner spot. Not nearly enough proudction.

Someone will still give value for him, based on the very potential you guys speak of.

I guess I'm a big fan of defense. If I'm a GM, I shoot to sign fast, athletic outfielders. I like well-rounded players, such as Derek Lee. Patterson can be one of those players: great in the field, some power at the plate, and speed on the basepaths.

I'm with ya Rawaction. I'm REALLY hoping that Corey play strong the rest of the year, so we can see him back. If he doesn't, I also think he will be traded. The ball is in his court.

How about Damon, Pie, and Patterson from left to right next year, with Murton as the 4th outfielder?

I want Pie in AAA until '07, and Patterson is a great example of why.

There's not a whole lot of power coming out of that outfield. I'd love to see Johnny, but we might need a corner outfielder who hit 30+ HR more.

No, but theres a ton of defense and both pie and patterson should be 25ish on the homer side. With our corner infielders, we don't need as much HR power in the outfield. That defense would save a ton of runs.

I agree. Defense can make a tremendous difference. Especially in all those 1 run games and in light of homeruns occurring at a lower rate this year without the roids. An outfield with Pie and Corey can really run down a lot of would be hits, turn doubles into singles, etc. There aren't that many 30 homerun guys without the juice, so I don't see glaring need for a power hitting outfielder, especially if we keep the infield intact with Lee, Ramirez, and Nomar. Corey should hit 25+ homeruns a year if he focuses at the plate and isn't asked to lead off. Pie will probably hit more homeruns than most leadoff hitters and Murton is going to get probably around 15 in his first full season along with a lot of doubles like Mark Grace.

I think that's a pretty optimistic view of things. And I don't like the idea of saying "Well, we're above average in other spots, so we can afford to be below average in other spots." You need to build on those strengths and use them as an advantage.

If Pie and Patterson are 2/3 of the starting outfield next year, you'd need 2001 Sammy to bring it just back up to league average.

If Patterson and Pie are 2/3 of our outfield next year, it's going to be a long, long season.

I'm not so sure.

If Patterson gets on a roll, and Pie hits 260/320, we could afford a Murton in LF. Now if for some crazy reason Sing gets a call up and hits the street running, or Huff is delivered to our doorsteps, we could have a very productive and young OF

You want Pie, Patterson, and Murton as your OF next year  ?

That's got 4th place written all over it. Sorry, but that would be just terrible. A career dead-ender in RF (cory), a young and not ready CF in Pie, and a AAA player in LF in Murton who will come back to earth (even though he really hasn't flown very high in the first place).

That's even worse than what we left camp with this year. Please tell me you were just kidding.

I'm not. I dont see Patterson as a "career dead-ender", and for Pie, it might be a jump, but I would accept it. Murton is the iffy part, but as I stated, Huff (or perhaps even Floyd via trade) would make a very nice addition. that would make Pie/Patterson 2/3 of our OF, which you seem terrified of.

This cannot be the Cubs outfield next year if they want to contend. Pie needs to play another season in the minors. Now, I'm all for Patterson and Murton if they're grouped with a big bat in the other spot (Dunn/Giles/etc).

Yes, I am terrified of that. And frankly, you ought to be as well if you wish to see a successful 2006 season...

i think the fact that people still find reasons to rag on him after he has a good game says something about some people and their dislike for patterson.

not at all. I guess my outlook is with the free agent class, Giles is the only real legimate choice we have baring a trade. I wouldnt have a problem with a bat like Giles/Huff/Floyd and Pie/Patterson rounding out the OF.

I really wouldnt. I think they could produce at bat and in the Field, well, minus Giles in the field

His stance looks way different to me, a lot more bend in his knees. I wanted them to move his feet apart, but I'm not sure if they did or not.

Len or Bob (think Bob) said they moved his feet farther apart.
