I love D. Lee, but looking at a 2006 Cubs roster that resembles this years' in any way makes me ill. Other threads are questioning trading Prior or Woody, but good starting pitching is MUCH more valuable than a good position player. Plus if you want to get maximum payback you have to trade the guy having a career year. That's Lee.

And we have a replacement for him in-house: Brandon Sing.

Sing's having another big year at West Tenn. His line: 289/400/575--yep, that's a .400 OBP. His defense won't touch Lee's, but 1B is one of the least important positions defensively anyway.

The question is, what do we get for Lee?

Or, put more succinctly, what would the Yanks or Red Sox give us for him?

Would the Sox give us Hanley Ramirez? (Plus something else, of course)

Package him for A-Rod and cash.

Ronny and Lee for ARod+cash. Sign Konerko.

The Yankees are only paying 16 mil a year to ARod, right? If we could get the to eat 3 mil a year of that, his contract would be awesome, instead of a millstone.

Done.

Seriously, package him with some pitching and bring in ARod. I wouldn't even demand much cash, considering the Yankees are only paying about $17M/year for him.

Then, in the interim until Dope or Sing is ready, see if you can pry Helton away from Colorado. They will pay something to be rid of him.

Lee has been a monster. But, he is quickly returning to his career norms. It would be unusual for the Cubs to identify moving a player at their highest value, but it should be considered. With ARod, ARam and Helton around the diamond, there would be enough punch to offset the anorexic FA OF market.

Hmmm, I have dated information on how much Texas is paying. Cot's contracts says they pay an average of 16 million for A-Rod, 112 mil over 7 years.

If it would bring us an A-Rod type, I'd most definately trade Lee. However, Lee has quickly become a leader on this team, and a fan favorite. You'd really have to sell it to the fans.

I don't think they'd take trading Lee for just prospects. You'd have to land an A-Rod in that type of deal.

I don't think bringing in A-Rod would require much of a sales job.

No, that wouldn't. But I'm saying something like that would be required if you moved Lee.

If you just trade him for a bunch of prospects, even really really good ones, would not sit well with the average Cub fan. You'd need to bring in a marquee player like an A-Rod to sell a Lee trade to Cub fans.

I don't think A-Rod is for sale, though, is he? He's putting together a pretty good year for the Yanks.

Here's an idea, why don't we improve the team by getting more good players instead of by getting rid of the few good ones we have?

I'd be up for that, too.

I'd do a A-Rod for Lee. and if we're trading Lee would anyone be against finding out what Brewers are going to want for Overbay?? (might have to go through another team, if Brewers won't trade him to the central).

Without a doubt, if I'm Jem Hendry I contact all the other GM's and say Lee is available and just let someone try to knock his socks off with a deal and see what's out there.

In my heart I still believe there's a deal with Lee to be made with the Red Sox - Theo has "man love" for D. Lee and has wanted him for 2-3 years - I say we take advantage of that and see what he'll offer us in return.

It never hurts to look at all options.

Will Cub onwership do that? Highly unlikely - we fall in love with players who have excellent seasons and think "aha - now we have out superstar!!! sign him to a big, long term contract!" Many many times that doesn't work for teams.

I'd start with a Lee for Manny deal and see what other options can be thrown in from both sides to get it done.

I can't see the Cubs having any pitchers NY can use. I think Wood and Maddux could waive their no-trade clauses for a few clubs, but I don't think either will want to get killed by the NY press.

Perhaps NY would take Lee and Patterson for ARod??

Anyone know if ARod has a no trade clause as well? I thought I remembered seeing somewhere when Sheffield was possibly being offered around that he is one of the few Yankees without one.

If ARod as a no trade clause I'd be surprised if he'd accept a trade to Chicago, but if it allows him to play SS again, maybe he would - hard to say.

Would I do Lee and Corey for ARod - yah, definitely. Would the Yankees go for it - maybe?

Get a 3rd team in there who takes Kerry Wood, and throws NY and the Cubs something, and maybe they bite. I can't see NY getting fired up about acquiring Hill, Williams, Mitre or any of the other young Cub pitchers.

If you (in the general sense, not anyone in particular) want ARod, come to grips with parting with Z or Prior. That's the only way it's going to happen.

True - the Yankees need pitching way more than they need a 1B I guess.

Unfort. AZ will try and squeeze everything they can out of Tony Clark at 1B.
