Renteria was apparently someone Theo Epstein had his eyes on for a few years and was able to sign him to a fairly expensive contract. It's been one of only a couple moves Theo has been second guessed on since he's been with the Sox, but it's hard to fault him.

Renteria should have been penciled in for 15+ HR's, 75+ RBI (with that team) and a solid glove at SS, instead he's really struggled this season (although he's finally got his average up to around .280).

The real surprise to me has been his really bad defense - that's just not like him to be playing such lousy defense. I've watched alot of games this year and so many of his errors have been on bonehead throws or not being able to hold onto the ball on double plays etc... He really has looked awful on defense, and for a guy who was a gold glover in the recent past, I think Boston has been shocked at his level of play.

Think he just isn't adjusting to the AL or Boston? Is this just a flukey year for him, or has he been overrated for a number of years?

You can create the same thread but insert Orlando Cabrera into it instead. While he was never a great offensive threat, he certainly has stunk up this season.

I think a good comparison is Darin Erstad's career. Outside of a .024 difference in slugging, their career numbers are similar.

Renteria had good seasons in 1996 and 2002, a breakout season in 2003, and a bunch of average or below average years. Erstad had what could have been considered good seasons in 1997 and 1998 had he been primarily an outfielder. Instead, he mostly played first at that time, and his numbers were at best average for a first baseman. He had a breakout season in 2000, and the rest of his career has been littered with seasons that were either average or below average.

It was the battle of the overpaid SS this last off-season, Nomar had to drop out of the race due to injury... Between Cabrera, Eckstein, Renteria, Guzman, and Nomar. I'd give it to Guzman.

None have been worth their salary, some worse than others.

Next year will probably have Furcal.

I may be a bit biased, but for about $3 mil/per I'd gladly take Eckstein's production value over the others you listed.

I was hoping that the Cubs would acquire Renteria. Good defense, not a stiff at the plate, still kinda young. I would still take him over nomar and without question Neifi.

Whats really funny is for the money that the Cardinals are paying Eckstien they definiatly got the best of the off-season SS shuffling

Sure, he's been a better value, which is based on the lesser contract. But, 3 mil. for a .256 EqA and below avg. defense is the sign of an overpaid player.

Renteria definately drove up the price for SS FA's, that's for sure!

This is what I don't understand - how does a guy go from being a gold glove SS to being likely rated below average at SS in such a short period of time?? I know guys go into defensive slumps as well as offensive ones, but I'm telling you from watching him this year - he's been AWFUL defensively. I think he has 20 errors right now and I'd say there've been at least 5-10 more times the scorers could have given him errors.

It's almost as though he's pulling a Steve Sax this year.

Putting on a Cardinal jersey adds 80 points to one's average. See Womack and Eckstein for more. Cardinal luck is ridiculous.

I KNEW Pujols is naturally a .260 hitter.......

Renteria only became a better-than-average shortstop after spending a few years in St. Louis. In Florida he put up similar fielding numbers to what he's put up in 2005.

Rolen was traded to StL a little more than halfway through the 2002 season...after which, many of Renteria's defensive statistics improved rather significantly. This current year for Renteria looks suspiciously like the statistics for his 1999 and 2000 years in StL.

Coincidence? Perhaps...

You be the judge.

Renteria's season is a good example of why in fantasy baseball I always stay away from guys the year after they sign a contract. On the other hand, i'll be more likely to get a guy on my team who is in a contract year. They always seem to do well. Look at renteria, cabrera, beltran.
