These are the names I hear thrown around the most. Also wondering if your choice is what the Cubs WOULD do as well. Edited by ZMovieman

I'd like to see Fredi Gonzalez there. Speier might be an ok choice, but I don't know much. Gonzalez was interviewed by the Cubs, but Hendry had his sights set on Dusty the whole time.

I'm not really in favor of either Little or Brenly. Neither is who I think would be the best to lead this team.

Sorry Vance. Dierker will probably have to go in under Other since people have started voting. Won't allow me to add any more choices.

They should hire Jim Leyland IMO.

GREAT manager. Great at working with younger talent as well as established super stars. Tony LaRussa said he has never seen a manager better at recognizing when a pitcher needs to be pulled or needs to be left in. Best p staff manager he's ever seen. He's old, he's experienced. Ask the Marlins how hiring a guy like that turned out for them.

Tracy, Leyland, Dierker would be an immed. upgrade at manager as far as those prev. experience.

John McLaren, Brad Mills, and Fredi Gonzalez would be an upgrade with those with no prev. managerial experience.

What do McLaren and Mills do now?

Uk, what's your view on Davey Johnson?

McLaren is Captain Lou's Bench coach down in TB. (More than likely, he will not adopt the same veteran fetish as Piniella).

Mills is the bench coach out in Boston.

Johnson is the type of manager that has rubbed his players the wrong way, he has had constant squabbles throughout his managerial career which I recall in Balt. and LA. I don't remember much from the Mets years, beyond my dislike for the Mets back then. He's a good manager, similar to LaRussa as far as trying to find whatever advantage possible, but everything I heard says he has no desire to return to coaching.

The more thought I've put into this, the more and more I've been considering Orel Hershiser as a possibility I'd like to see as well. His work ethic, approach, and understanding of the game put him near the top of any managerial candidate.

Hershiser is an interesting possibility. I hadn't given him any thought, but he's an intelligent, well-spoken person who has done a great job and paid his dues as a pitching coach.

His game preparation is right there as well, he was one of the hardest workers as far as preparation before one of his starts. He wouldn't leave a stone unturned.

I think Orel would be an outstanding choice as well.

I'd like to see Gary Varsho considered. Sure he's young, but he's an ex-Cub (from the magical 1989 team no less), he's been a coach with the Philadelphia Phillies for a couple of years and he once lead the Reading Phillies to a AA Eastern League title. He might be too much of an up and comer, and sure he'd make some mistakes, but I think he'd be a great long-term fix.
