With Williamson & Wood being added to the pen, any chance of this?? In 10 starts, Rusch had a 3.32 ERA as a starter, which is better than Prior and nearly as good as Z. Hill was alright vs. SF and Arz, but those offenses rank 13th and 9th in the NL, and it's getting down to crunch time now. Hill can get his chance next year, along w/ Murton.

Honestly I'd like to see Hill get a few more starts this year to judge him by. He's already 25 and he's not getting any younger so the sooner we find out if he has IT the better it would be for him and the Cubs.

I don't think WIlliams or Hill have done anything to remove them from the rotation. You'd like to see longer outings, but neither has gotten shelled yet. Rusch doesn't excite me.

Greg Maddux, however, HAS done plenty to not deserve a rotation spot of late. I wouldn't protest a swap of Maddux & Rusch, i know it'd end Greg's Chicago tenure with bitterness AGAIN, but it saves us $9 mil next year.

Nice timing.

i would definitely move rusch back into the starting rotation. right now our starting rotation is completely depleated.

wood -- in bullpen after being injured basically the whole season.

maddux -- having worst year of his career by far.

dempster --now the closer.

hill --shelled.

williams --shelled.

that leaves us with zambrano and prior going 1 and 2 and nobody going 3, 4, and 5, yikes, hopefully we can get to something like this next year:

SP1 mark prior 203 IP, 20-7, 2.98 ERA

SP2 carlos zambrano 221 IP, 19-6, 3.71 ERA

SP3 ryan dempster 188 IP, 12-12, 4.01 ERA

SP4 glendon rusch 193 IP, 10-9, 3.88 ERA

SP5 jerome williams 168 IP, 11-7, 4.21 ERA

closer: kerry wood, 41 saves and 2.02 ERA.

its the only way i see wood staying healthy and entire season at this point. plus, with him throwing 100mph with 5 different pitches, he could easily be a 40-save guy.

Am bumping this. Don't want to see another Hill 5 inning outing or 1 inning outing.

but you're up for another maddux or prior shellacking? people keep selling hill's first two outings short, but the way maddux is going, i'd be thrilled to get six innings of two run ball out of him.

if rusch is moved to the rotation, that leaves the cubs w/ just one lefty in the pen...i'm not so sure they'd do that.

and honestly, is the difference between hill and rusch going to help the cubs leap frog 5 teams (including the brewers  ) to win the wild card?

leave Hill in there and get him some experience.

exactly. we need to leave williams and hill in the rotation for the rest of the season regardless of bad outings. it's time to see exactly where they are. that way we go into the offseason having a decent idea of what we have in those two. obviously it changes what we need if we KNOW they can hold done the 4-5 spots in the rotation as opposed to when we were hoping dubois could hold down on outfield spot this season. it probably might be a good idea to turn it over to cedeno and pie also come sept 1~

hill --shelled.

Yes he gave up a lot of runs but almost all of those were on cheap hits and poorly played balls. I'd still send him out there again.

I've harped on how horrible Rusch has been since his last few starts and his entire time in the bullpen. Fred was kind enough to show his stats.

He has been absolutely brutal since right before he was shifted to the pen. He should have been traded at the break when his stats looked decent.

Looking at his stats once again......

The second line is Rusch's time in the starting rotation. Since returning to the bullpen, Rusch had a really crappy month where everyone noticed he had no movement on his pitches and he really got hit hard. Was this just trouble in readjusting to being a reliever again ? I don't know. The last 2 weeks have been better.

If you start Rusch, do it to build whatever trade value he might have going into next year.

But, to keep him as a long reliever/emergency starter does nothing but lead to him being less productive and more overpaid.

Someday, there will be a manager who will believe in my philosophy of giving a starter a couple of games off during the Summer, just for rest purposes. This would extend to all 5 starters for a minimum of 2 starts each at various points during the season.

Am bumping this again. Get ticked. Whatever. I don't care. Sorry but Hill's not ready for prime time. At least get someone in there who will keep the game close.

you're right. hill really put a damper on the cubs postseason hopes today. they were riding a hell of a winning streak until this afternoon.

plus, rusch has been AWESOME lately!

So let him get drilled again?? You think that's good for his confidence?

You're right though. I did sell his first 2 starts short. That plate of crow must not be going down well.

Starting Rusch at this stage besides any reason except building up his already minimal trade value isn't worth it. Let Hill and Williams get knocked around, some pitchers go thru growing pains.

wow, what a dick.

so what is this about? do you think you're some kind of baseball whiz because you predicted occasional problems for a 25 year old who started the season in single A? wow, any more bold predictions for us, nostradamus?

for all you people in the 'told you so' business, why don't you make a prediction yourself once in a while instead of just sitting back and waiting for people to be 'wrong' so you can give them a sly little wink about how you were soooooooooooo right, but how it's ok because not everyone can be as smart as you.

let's hear a list of ten prospects that you think are going to pan out, and then i'll get back to you four starts into their major league career. take your time...i'll wait.

Omg. Settle down kid. Your first post in this thread today was a little hostile. If you're going to dish it out, be ready to take it as well. I'll leave it at that and disregard what you just wrote.

you don't have to disregard it. and don't call me 'kid'.

and i can 'take it' just fine. i'm just sitting here patiently waiting for your list of prospects. judging by the fact that you've made 7 posts in the minor league forum i'm sure you know quite a bit about prospects, and i'm sure you knew darn well that hill would suck in his first shot at the bigs since i'll bet you've been following him for years.

The Cubs don't have 10 prospects who will pan out.
