IMO, The Cubs MUST sign Brian Giles this offseason. Yes, I know he will be 35 next year and he is only on pace for only about 15 homers, but he's doing it in probably the biggest pitcher's park in the league. On the road this year he is hitting a ridiculous .337/.474/.613. He has 87 walks (leads all of MLB) while striking out just 47 times, with a .425 OBP. His career OBP is .412. He is exactly what this offense needs. A 3-4-5 of Lee, Giles and Ramirez would probably be the best in the league.

Obviously his age is a risk, but he doesn't have much of an injury history over his career. I expect his SLG% (.545 career) to drop off over the next few years, but I think it's reasonable to expect his OBP to stay in the .400 range due to his tremendous eye.

I'd like to hear other's thoughts on him and what you guys think the chances are that he ends up in a Cubs uniform next year.

Another team will offer him more for longer than Hendry is willing to.

Hendry is trying to build a core of a team, not an all-star team. If Giles was closer to 30 yrs old, that'd be one thing, but he is 35 yrs old. Besides Hendry won't offer anything more then 2 yrs, and Giles won't sign for anything less then 4 yrs. So I doubt Giles will have any interest in coming to Chicago.

I thought i heard somewhere that he wanted to play with his brother (Atlanta) before his career was over, but i could have dreamed that somewhere

I'm not sure about Brian but I know I've heard Marcus say that before.

i would rather take giles for 8mil than burnitz for 7. if he is not too expensive...which with age and production he shouldn't be, i would like to take look at him. reggie sanders is another one. he is hurt now but really hasn't ever been before. he hits 270-280 every year. has an obp of 340-350 every year and hits 25-30hrs every year. plus he stills bases. he is not very expensive considering what he does.

Giles is too old....Get Dunn. most consistent HR hitter in the past 3 years even better than Pujols. Sure he strikes out alot but gets on bases alot. His OBP over the last 2 years is one of the best in the major leagues.

How 'bout these numbers at Wrigley

I dont see why nobody would want him if we can get him to sign a 2 or even 3 year deal. He is EXACTLY the type of hitter we need. He has a high OBP and walks more than he strikes out. I'd like to put him in front of Lee but im sure it would go Lee-Giles-Ramirez, which isn't too bad. I'd love to see it get done. I wouldnt mind having his brother either.

Giles is a typical Trib move. 3 years and 27 million. I can see them signing him ala Alou a few years ago.

People are pipe~dreaming if they think the Cubs will trade for or sign Dunn. Cincy's nearly impossible to deal with, and no way will the Trib give Dunn over 5 years. See Carlos Beltran for more. Someone will probably give Dunn 7 and 110.

When the Cubs have so many good young/prospect outfielders (Patterson, Pie, Murton, Sing), I don't see the wisdom of signing a player of Giles age to a contract of more than one or two years.

I disagree that Hendry won't offer anything over 2 years. That's absurd. He will easily offer 3 and maybe 4 to the right player. Is Giles the right player, now thats the question. I would say he is far from Hendry's first choice. But his top choices will have to be acquired via trade. If he is unable to obtain any of his top choices, then offering Giles and/or Damon 3-year contracts would be the smart thing to do in my book. Both of them are better than Burnitz. Damon can play CF and lead-off, if Corey doesn't improve. If Giles is signed to replace Burnitz, then Lawton should also be offered a contract given his ability to lead-off better than anybody else the Cubs have.

Lawton, Nomah, Giles, Lee, ARam, Walker, Patterson and Barrett would score lots of run. I'd much rather have Giles and his obp, power, left-handed bat and experience over Murton. Too bad Murton can't convert to a 2b or catcher. If Pie steps it up, Patterson could be the odd man out. Edited by CubfaninCA

What big name free agents has Hendry signed???

Maddux (not much if any competition)

Hawkins (home town advantage)

Nomar

T. Walker was a decent signing, too.

I wouldn't call Nomar a free agent signing. he was traded for and resigned, he was coming off an injury and settled for 8Mill, either there was no interest or his wanting to stay in Chicago was 10x times anything Hendry did to get it done

Maddux & Nomah = Giles. Giles won't hit the jackpot due to his age and his loss of power. Some may question whether he was "aided" in the past.
