"According to "Inside Redbirds" on station WHBQ, John Gall is on his way to St. Louis. Gall has been one of the Cardinals' hot prospects in the past, but has been consistently passed over for promotion. This apparently means that Larry Walker will be heading to the 15-day DL, joining fellow starters Yadier Molina, Scott Rolen, and Reggie Sanders. Gall is 27 years old and was hitting .277 with 10 HR in Memphis."

Let's see..

Mike Matheny to Yadier Molina to Mike Mahoney

Scott Rolen to Scott Seabol

Reggie Sanders to John Rodriguez

Larry Walker to John Gall.

Never would thought of that if you ask me.

Thing is I'm not so sure the Memphis Redbirds can hold off Houston or even the Cubs..

I'm not going to make excuses.

I'm just glad it's not September. If we still have these guys starting 2 weeks before the playoffs I'll start to panic.

In a "glass half full" way, I hope our regulars are rested and ready to go after this. Missing the dog days of summer may end up being a good thing if they all come back 100%. Rolen worries me the most. That, and I don't think that Albert is healthy. He doesn't go ofer in big series like he did this weekend.

I also am worried about Rolen (supposedly we are interested in Mora). Yeah you can tell Albert is hurting and let's not forget Edmonds who still is feeling the affects of that collision with Reggie.. Oh well. I guess it's better now than later.

I think Jim Hendry would entertain offers for Jose Macias....

And if the Cards do that you can be certain he'll be a .400 hitter with 20 homers and 70 rbi's this half.

Also, be glad it's not April. The timing of the injuries is important. Had this been the middle of April, I guarantee the Cardinals wouldn't have a double digit lead in June and July. THe cushion you have may be enough to hold off the Astros and Cubs. Just hope your starters remain healthy. But remember, the Cards are 3-4 in their last seven. Have they had a seven game record of that at all this year?

Exactly. If you're gonna have injuries, now is the time to have them with a double digit lead.

This team is beat to crap right now, and Walker just went on the DL. If there is any truth to the Mora rumor, now would be a good time to get him...

Cardinals to place Walker on DL

Gall will replace injured slugger in Cardinals lineup

The Cardinals' most likely plan will be to place Larry Walker in the 15-day DL. (Scott Rovak/Cardinals)

John Gall's almost interminable wait is almost over. Larry Walker is probably about to begin a much shorter, but likely no less frustrating, wait of his own.

Gall, who has been playing in the high Minors for the Cardinals since 2002, is expected to be added to the Major League roster on Tuesday when St. Louis takes on the Padres at PETCO Park. Gall will likely be recalled to take the place of Walker, who would be placed on the disabled list due to a herniated disk in his neck.

Gall was scheduled to travel with the team to California on Monday, though no move will officially be made until Tuesday because of the off-day in the schedule. Walker has been battling soreness in his neck all season, and he has already undergone two cortisone injections to ease the discomfort.

It is possible that St. Louis will make another move, sending out another player in order to add Gall to the roster, while trying to buy some time and avoiding sidelining Walker for 15 days. However, the most likely plan will be to place Walker on the DL, allowing him to recuperate, and add Gall to the roster.

Walker struggled through May and much of June as he battled a series of maladies. However, after the last cortisone treatment in his neck, he took off on his best offensive stretch of the season. He's hitting .340 with a .415 on-base percentage and .553 slugging percentage in July, but he sat out the last two games of St. Louis's weekend series against the Cubs.

Should Walker go on the DL, he would become the fourth Cardinals regular on the shelf. Yadier Molina has been out since early July with a broken bone in his hand, Reggie Sanders has a broken leg and will be out for at least three more weeks and Scott Rolen was recently placed back on the DL due to continuing soreness in his left shoulder.

Gall, 27, has spent most of the last 2 1/2 seasons at Triple-A Memphis. He's a polished, line-drive hitter with solid strike zone judgment. He doesn't have outstanding power, but has a plan at the plate. The Cardinals have asked him to improve his defense in the outfield, and most reports are that he has made progress. As of Monday morning, he was batting .270/.339/.438 (batting average/on-base/slugging) with 10 home runs, 17 doubles and 47 RBIs for Memphis.

Does anybody else think that Walker will retire at the end of the season?

At least from what I have heard here it seems as if he's pretty much announced it already, although it may not have been done formally. But, man, he may not be able to come back and play consistently the rest of the way. He says the cortisone shots aren't working. But we'll have to see.

There is no doubt the Cards are hurting in a big way. Molina, Rolen, and Sanders were flukes a la Prior. Walker was predictable, given his age and injury history. Pujols is a concern as well. If he goes down or is ineffective due to injury for any period of time, no pitching performance is going to save us in the short run.

I am hopefully optimistic, but playing .500 ball at this point is questionable.

After empathizing but not experiencing Cubs injuries the past couple of years, I am just now understanding. Very frustrating.

Yeah, but as Dalgreen pointed out, you have a big lead to cuishion the impact of these injuries. Not that they don't hurt, but it really sucks when it happens early and have to play catch up all year. The Cards might see that lead shrink to 5 or 6 games, but that's as far as it will go, I think.

Now if something really is wrong with Pujols' shoulder (and he didn't look right in the last series), you could have a real problem.

Yes the Cards have had a stretch this season of 3-4 in 7 games. The first 7 games of the season. They may have had a similar stretch agian but I only looked till I found one example.

18-10 since July 1, with the roster racked with injuries.

We get Sanders and Molina back for the postseason, we'll be fine. Given that Rolen and Walker have contributed just about zero this season, any production from them will be gravy.
