Why does the pitchers glove have a the index finger sticking out? What does it do??

I believe you stick your index finger out of the glove to protect it. When in the glove, that finger rests just behind the "pocket" and therefore takes the most abuse from hard thrown balls. As a kid we didn't have holes for our index finger, we just slid it out over the top of the glove. It would eventually wear a nice comfortable little groove . . .

My infielders glove is the same way, it feels too cramped with the finger inside it. Wears a nice groove between the index and middle finger.

I hate having my finger stick out. Its annoying, and uncomfortable. Yea, my finger takes a lil abuse sometims from a ball striking it dead on, but oh well. Most people i know do have their finger stick out, i cant stand it.

My glove that I have had my entire life has a specific finger hole and I definately use it. If feels wierd to keep the index finger inside the glove and I feel that you can control the squeeze much better with the finger out.

i don't even put my index finger in the recommended slot, mine sits where my middle finger should be...i double up fingers in the pinky slot.

haha, last sentence can be taken out of context nicely.

I've always done the same thing, along with many of the guys I have played with. You avoid the punishment on your index finger, but it is more comfortable than sticking it out of the glove. IMO, it also helps you close the glove quickly.

yep, the glove basically closes itself i think....it feels so terrible to try and wear my glove any other way.

I know its not clear, but my cam is messed up. It's an outfielders glove with no hole for the index finger. When I first got it, I did not stick my index finger out. Instead, I put it all the way in (or as much as I could) and there was this pounty-sharp thingy in the index finger slot and my finger started bleeding.

See, i think its harder to close when the finger is sticking out.

baseball mitts are a matter of personal preference, but the hole near the pointer finger is to protect the pointer finger from hard throws to the pocket of the glove (like a previous poster said). almost all quality first basemen's gloves have them and catcher's gloves usually have a wider opening that allow the catcher to move his pointer finger outside of the glove.

When pitching I like to leave my index finger out of the glove; it helps me to locate better. I always point pretty much where I'm going and I can visualize the ball's path as I'm winding up. While fielding though I really don't have a preference, whichever way my finger goes while I am putting my hand into the glove works for me.

I always found that to be the case as well.

I've got a "batter's" glove that I wear inside my glove that has extra padding up the index finger and along the palm just below the knuckle

Is it just me or is this one of the most mind-numbing topics ever brought up?

This expert says that this is a wonderful topic, one quite worthy of discussion.

I'm not trying to be inconsiderate, I am just trying to figure out why the topic of a hole that has been in place since baseball gloves were first invented is being discussed more than 130 years later.

I guess I've always had my finger sticking out of the hole, and rarely will I ever leave it in...just feels natural, probably because I've done it my whole life. I have smaller gloves (I played 2b/3b/SS) and it feels odd with my finger inside the glove.
