Just curious... so what does everyone think Lee will do next year?

I'm thinking .310 (with walk pretty much same as this year)-40-110ish?

Speaking of players who seem to blow up out of nowhere... how about Melvin Mora?

I'm thinking Lee will hit in the 315-325 range, with a 380-400 OPS, and a 550-600 SLG.

I'd like to see how he finishes this year before I make any predictions, but I would guess he'd better his career averages in most categories.

That's what I'm thinking. It's really unlikely he puts up these type of numbers again, but I don't think he'll regress all the way back to his career norms.

It seems like everyone has been talking about Lee and Albert, but there could be two other players just as valuable: Cabrera and Andruw Jones.

If the Cubs do not make the playoffs and D. Lee slides at the end, it could be a very close vote. Andrew Jones appears to be willing his team to the playoffs. The one negative is his low BA, .278. Cabrera has put up good numbers and I could see him beating D. Lee out for the BA title. Then the argument begins about whether a player on a non-playoff team deserves the award assuming the Fish and Cubs do not make it. Add that AP seems to be hurt and the MVP race is going to be an interesting fight to the end.

Let's all sit back enjoy a cold one and a great finish to the baseball season. This is better than the steriod race of 1998. 8)

With D. Lee sliding a bit of late, does anyone have a different perspective on the MVP race?

I still think that Cabrera and Jones have a shot at the award. But if Lee continues to slide the award will most likely go to Albert.

Lee is still the MVP right now with Pujols making up ground. I think the other two are longshots at the point.

Lee has been looking pretty tired lately; hopefully the day off yesterday will give him some energy back. Also, word is that he and ARam have been struggling with sore backs from carrying the Cubs' offense all year.

Is Lee still the MVP if he does not win the triple crown and the Cubs do not make the playoffs?

I know you might think that I am a homer but Albert is coming on strong. I see him winning the MVP at this point. Earlier I would have said Lee, but then again last year at this time I would have given it to Rolen.

Truffleshuffle, why do you feel that Cabrera and Jones have no chance? Jones has carried his team all season and is having a great year. Plus they will make the playoffs again because of him. Cabrera is a hitting machine and will probably win his first batting title if Lee continues to struggle.

If Baker continues to fill out the lineup card, and not put Ramirez batting after Lee, Lee will not see enough hittable pitches to win anything.

I would not count Lee out yet....but he does appear to be fading a bit.

As of today, yes, just as Bonds was the MVP last year even though his team did not make the playoffs. Without Lee, the Cubs aren't anywhere close to making the playoffs.

Right now he leads the NL in BA, OBP, SLG, and OPS. He's tied for the league lead in HR's. He's third in RBI and second in runs. He's also tied for the lead in doubles as well.

As long as he is leading in those categories, I still say he's the MVP.

Good points Lance. If the vote was done today, Lee would edge out Albert.

Yet, given D. Lee's slide of late I don't think he will continue to lead in all those categories. Over the last month, his SLG has dropped from .721 to .697, BA from .381 to .360, and OBP from .456 to 439. Plus you take into consideration that D. Lee only batted .249 last year after the All-Star break, he is supposedly nursing an injuried back (someone stated that previously on this thread), and he is getting less pitches to hit now. If I was a betting man and I am I would put my money on Albert.

If Pujols catches him in some of those categories, I may revise my opinions. But based on the data I have available today, Lee is the MVP whether the Cubs are in the play-offs or not.

On the other hand, things could significantly change.

I would say Cabrera has no chance because the MLB is all about earning your respect over the years and Cabrera is what, 22? Way too young to actually get the recognition he deserves. Not to mention his defense is pretty bad if I recall.

I have a feeling Albert will get it even if Lee continues to lead in those categories. The media is finally starting to realize that he has been deserving the last 5 years if there was no Bonds. Much like gold gloves, they are going to give it to whoever they are more familiar with.

What is so funny about this statement? I guess I will take the award if you are going to hand it out though. \:D/

I would first like to thank the mods for allowing me the opportunity to post on this board. I would also like to thank my mom and Dad. Don't worry dad I hope they find a cure for being a Cub fan. I would also like to say I love you to my wife and kids.

It's funny becaue the post you're referring to about the injured back reads something like this: "Also, word is that he and ARam have been struggling with sore backs from carrying the Cubs' offense all year."

It was a joke.

I disagree with the Bonds analogy to last year. In 2004, Bonds had an OPS of 1.442, with Pujols finishing second at 1.088. That is a pretty significant difference. Also, Pujols played on a team with three MVP candidates, which split the vote some, and made him seem less valuable considering the offense that surrounded him.

D Lee has an OPS of 1.129 compared to Pujols at 1.052. Lee's stats aren't that much better than Pujols' stats, and Pujols isn't surrounded by the same offensive production this year as he was last year, in fact, Ramirez is posting better numbers than any Cardinals hitter (besides Pujols). If the season ended today, I think Pujols is the MVP. If your team doesn't make the playoffs, I think you have to have far-superior stats to be the MVP.

Besides that, PujolsPower is a Cardinals fan (surprise, surprise).

It's still too early to call, IMO.

Just being objective. Part of the MVP award is based on how your team does. That gives the advantage to Pujols. Lee's advantage in some of the statistical categories isn't enough to make up for the team's record. Lee is in line to win the Silver Slugger.

Sammy didnt deserve the MVP in 98, and if the season ended today, Pujols wouldnt deserve the MVP. You cant hold Lee accountable for our pitching injuries/ineffectiveness.

I think that you have to factor in a teams record when deciding the MVP. Did ARod deserve to win MVPs each year in Texas when he put up good numbers, but his team struggled?

I am basing my selection of Pujols as MVP on the precedents set by the voters in previous years. Lee has better number right now (although I think Pujols will finish with better numbers), but if he is not leading in at least two of the triple crown categories, I don't see him as the MVP without making the playoffs.

At the end of the day, it is still too early to accurately predict the MVP, and it could still end up going to Jones or Cabrera.
