After Matt Murton's great start yesterday, when was last player you can remember who was called up and immediatly made an impact. Every rookie I remember with the Cubs always struggles when called up. Tuffy Rhodes doesn't count. He wasn't called up or our prospect. I remember Lance Dickson going 4-0, then having arm problems.

I remember thinking Augie Ojeda was going to be a great Cub for a long time after his 1st game.

Are you being serious?...I dont remember his first game, so I cant tell.

I'm serious. My memory could be wrong, but I remember watching his first game on WGN. His first AB, I remember predicting a homerun from him. The pitch comes, and he hits a screaming line drive that at 1st looked like it would be a homerun. But it ended up being a screaming flyout to the warning track. I thought that was a sign of good things to come...well, it wasn't.

Of course, my memory could be horrible and that isn't what happened at all.

The fans loved him as well. I can remember watching him play at the University of Tennessee and being impressed with his hustle and drive. I was thrilled when the Cubs got him, and loved the attention the fans gave him both at Tennessee and in Chicago. Is he in Minnesota or Rochester now?

Augie was 1-4 with a double in his first game which was at home against the Tigers. The next day he was 2-3 with a walk against Arizona at home. The next day, he was 1-3 with a double, a walk an RBI and a run scored.

Certainly an impressive first three games; unfortunately he didn't hit much after that.

Carmello Martinez.

I'll second that. His debut was my first and only trip to Wrigley. Walked his first time up, then went yard next time up in his first official at-bat. His numbers weren't much to look at in his Cub career, but it seemed like every time he came up in a key situation he came through.

First time: Murton's impressive big league debut reminded Jeromy Burnitz of his first game -- he struck out on three pitches, and the third was called. Two days later, he collected his first hit, an infield hit.

Jose Macias did better. In his first Major League at-bat, he hit a pinch-hit homer off Cleveland's Steve Reed on an 0-2 count.

"I remember the whole thing -- that's my first hit," said Macias, who was playing for the Detroit Tigers.

Doug Dascenzo was the last Cubs player with more than two hits in his Major League debut. Dascenzo went 3-for-5 with a double and scored two runs, but the Cubs lost, 6-5, to Cincinnati on Sept. 2, 1988.

The last Cubs player to reach safely three times in his Major League debut was Joe Girardi. He had two hits and a walk in the Cubs' 5-4 Opening Day win over Philadelphia on April 4, 1989.

Hector Villanueva was the last Cubs player to record a hit, run and RBI in his debut on June 1, 1990, in a 6-4 loss to St. Louis. He also was the last Cubs player to homer in his Major League debut.

By the way, the red-headed Murton already has a nickname.

"We call him 'Naranja,'" Macias said. "That's orange [in Spanish]."

How could you not say Kerry Wood... after his rookie season greatness was expected from him. Too bad he still hasnt fullfilled it yet he could be such a great pitcher.

Mark Prior, Kerry Wood, Juan Cruz. Farther back - Jerome Walton & Dwight Smith.

Didn't Jerome Walton have two HRs in his first game? IIRC he was also ROY that year.

ROY, yes; two homers, no. He did have two hits in his first game, but he barely hit two homers the entire season.

OK, I exaggerate; he had 5.

The answer to this one is Wellemeyer, as said earlier. Struck out the side in the 17th inning of a Cubs win. I would say that would qualify, and I can't think of a more memorable debut since then.

How about Jon Leicester last year when he pitched 3 shutout innings and earn the victory last year against the Angels
