After seeing the Real Sports segment on Wally Backman, I think he deserves a shot managing somewhere. Why not here? The Cubs need a guy who can light a fire. So here's my coaching staff next year...

Manager - Wally Backman

Bench Coach - Joe Girardi

Pitching Coach - Steve Stone

Hitting Coach - Mark Grace

3rd Base - Chris Speier

1st Base - Ryne Sandberg

Fantasy picks

Manager: Larry Deirker

Pitching Coach: Hershiser

Batting Coach: The guy at West Tenn

Bench Coach: Me, hey it is a fantasy and I don't know what a bench coach does exactly, so I'm guessing I'm qualified.

1st base: Don't care

3rd base: Not Wendel Kimm

New GM: Goony's evil twin, he hates to spend the Trib's money and will demand production for dollars.

Bobby Dickerson for Manager. He knows the game and isn't afraid to get in the ump's face when necessary :getyou:

Manager - Joe Girardi (Knows players, knows pitchers, is respected, is a winner)

Bench Coach - Eric Karros (Class act that recognizes the intangibles)

Pitching Coach - Mike Maddux (Better at teaching than his brother)

Hitting Coach - Mark Grace (Great approach to hitting, hope he can teach it)

3rd Base - Chris Speier (Seems to be doing a fine job)

1st Base - Ryne Sandberg (Great base runner)

Sounds like Jim Leylandwants to get back into coaching. He's a good candidate.

I'd say Girardi would also be a good candidate, but I think the Yanks are grooming him to replace Torre.

I also think Speier might get a chance if Dusty if fired.

that is hands down the finest wish list on the planet.

I would love to have Karros back with the Cubs!

Unless the Trib sells and the new owners fire everyone in the organization, Stone and Grace will never work for the Cubs again.

Wally Backman played 2nd base in the majors for several years. I believe he was on the Mets World Series team in 1986. He was hired to be the manager of the (let me know if I get the team wrong) Arizona Diamondbacks to replace Brenly, but was fired hours later when it was found he was a convicted felon (drunk driving) and other stuff he didn't report on his application.

Shortest stint as a manager ever.

I doubt Greg will jump right into a pitching coach position when his time is done. I don't know how any player who spends 15-20 Springs, Summers and Falls traveling all over the country. Especially with kids at home.

That's probably got to be the hardest sacrifice all these players make for the big bucks. Worth it. Yes. But, the loss of watching their offspring grow up has to be difficult.
