It’s a little hard to bridge the gap when one guy is throwing a Nico comp (complementary!) and the other guy is pulling out Rickey Henderson.

I knew even saying the name Rickey Henderson would be called out, maybe even rightly. However, I said "a poor man's Ricky Henderson" which is very different. He could end up being a "very poor man's Ricky Henderson" who never sees a day in the bigs. The way Kepley plays the game is a bit similar to Ricky, that's all. And it really isn't similar to Nico's game at all. In terms of WAR, I'd say Nico will probably always be superior to Kepley in terms of BA, having a lower k%,  and defensive WAR.

I'm just trying to get people on the same page as to what type of player Kepley is. Not trying to disrespect anyone. Just trying to make sure that people are noticing some of the major strengths of Kepley's game that may not be obvious.

A poor man's Rickey Henderson is somewhere between Lou Brock and Kenny Lofton

Kenny Lofton would be an amazing result if he could be like that.  Sign me up for that today.

Yeah I mean I have no strong opinions on Kepley one way or the other, but throwing a Rickey Henderson comp (no matter what level of poverty you want to qualify the comp with!) is giving “Harold Reynolds analyzes the draft” vibes. Dude is 17th among hitters in fwar all time. There’s some guys whose careers are just so hallowed that invoking their name in relation to a back end top 100 prospect who just hit AA is just silly on its face.

I tend to like players who play like Kepley but I’m still waiting to see more upper level success before I buy in, but even then, as others have mentioned, it’ll be interesting to see if he actually makes sense in the cubs lineup when he is ready. If Seiya walks, if Busch levels out closer to 18-22 HRs than the 34 he hit last year, etc. they’re going to need to find somewhere for more thump in the lineup, and COF is one of the only spots that’s not spoken for in the coming years.

Kenny Lofton should be in the hall of fame. That would be an insane result for Kepley.

Kenny Lofton definitely came to mind for me, but the BA he carried most of his career is probably 40 points higher than what Kepley can hope to do.  Some of that is skill, some of that is just the way the game is today.  If you look at Lofton's 2002 season where he went

.261 .350 .414 .763

with 11 HRs, that seems like a reasonable expectation to me.
