Outright releasing him?

He can’t be in the pen, so yes, release him or figure out an IL visit, or mystery injury that keeps him out all year.

Nor should he or any GM. And none would pay a ridiculous price except for MAYBE the Dodgers.

1. We don’t know what the price will be. Maybe it’ll be “astronomical” or “ridiculous,” maybe not. We got Edward Cabrera, who had 3 years of control, for an OF K’ing 42% of the time and a post-hype SS prospect sporting a .576 OPS in AA.

 2. There is no one in our farm system I particularly care about losing.

3. We’ve seen this movie before. Just last year, as a matter of fact! At this point in time, we do not have someone we can reliably count on to start game 2 in the playoffs. We can hope Boyd and Steele are healthy and effective. We can hope Brown doesn’t hit a wall in August and continues to look like the guy he has. We can hope  Cabrera takes the leap that I think he’s capable of. But it’s a lot of hopes and I’d prefer not to be patchworking it together again in September/october.

i frankly done care of its Peralta, Webb, Ryan, whoever else might pop up in that tier. Just pay the cost to get someone we feel good about who in the playoffs.

I agree they need to get someone and so some good. But to make a blanket statement if “pay it” without any knowledge of what “it” is doesn’t make sense. And right now I am positive the ask is much higher than it will be closer to the TDL. My diagrent with you isn’t in the belief that they need to get an quality arm, it is in the statement “pay it” without knowledge of the price. There is a point where they have to say no.

I wish Jed would spend $$ on Starting Pitching in the offseason, rather than prospects in season.

Seems like a yearly occurrence (aside from ’16 of course)

I agree. I really hope this off season we end up with Peralta. I would be fine letting both Happ and Seiya walk if they allocate money to a front end starter. Maybe try signing Conforto again and fill the corner spots with maybe another platoon outfield and guys from the system.
Hard to criticize him for this year. They did add Cabrera and assumed Horton for a full year. Once Shota took the QO they did have 5 men for the rotation with Assad, Brown, Rea and Wicks as depth. And they had Steele coming back and Wiggins close. How do you figure the injuries they had?

When Boyd comes back I think it is a real possibility the Cubs end up releasing Tailon. I think  Rea is a better rotation piece and I also think Brown will prove he belongs in the rotation by then. I don’t see Jamo as a bullpen guy.
And this isn’t even considering adding a pitcher via trade or Steele coming back. I really think if the Cubs get some health on the staff and also trade for a pitcher, Jamo won’t be with the team come August.

I'm not sure about that.  Taillon had 3 effective starts before this one.  1 terrible start on the road yesterday.  They're desperate for SP.  Assad sucks.  They have nobody after Brown and someone else will inevitably get hurt.  They can piggy back Brown or Rea for 4 IP in the pen.

Taillon would have to keep sucking as the weather keeps heating up for a release IMO.

He's tapped out on payroll in the offseason.  If he wants more SP in the offseason he'd need to trade prospects anyways or not sign someone like Bregman.

Right. We literally never know the cost of a trade until it happens, but we still talk about them anyway. We’re bringing some assumptions and past comps to the table. For instance, I assume the package won’t require anyone on the 26-man. If they ask for Shaw or Brown, they can keep dreaming. But there’s not a guy in our system I’m considering off limits. That’s not to give the Mets carte blanche on, like, a 5-for-1 trade where they get our top 5 prospects, but if they want a package similar to what Cabrera went for (organizational top 3, top 10, and a lottery ticket), with some sort of a kicker to factor in the midseason premium and the fact that Peralta has a longer track record of success, that’s fine with me.

taillon and rea do not belong on the mound in a playoff series, tbd on Steele and Boyd. Right now, it’s Shota, Cabrera, 4 innings of Ben brown, and the shrug emoji. Wiggins and his 8 IP and our cadre of blocked prospects shouldn’t be hugged too tightly.

Right now 4 innings of Brown. But the playoffs are 4 months away. By then it could very well be Brown, Shota and Cabrera. Hopefully someone else proves worthy.

The cost will be astronomical

Not anymore than blowing an opportunity to play in the postseason by trotting out Taillon,  Rea, and Boyd every 5th day

Hopefully brown doesn’t hit a wall and hopefully Cabrera starts pitching better before then! Fingers crossed!

Boyd's numbers are excellent besides the ERA.  High Ks, low walks, not giving up HR, low FIP.
