Tonight's rankings will be very interesting. How will Bama, Oklahoma, ND and Miami stack up? Where do Vandy, BYU and Utah sit? Considering none of these teams have quality opponents left except for OU against Missouri's backup QB (thanks, stupid super conferences), the committee might have to show their cards a bit.

What horsefeathers. A&M not in the prime ABC time slot for the big matchup with the 1-10 Samford Fighting Anteaters (or whatever they’re called)? It’s a conspiracy.

Yes, a generally ****** weekend of college football before the big Thanksgiving week matchups.

Threatening to leave in 10 years when the current media rights deal is up... real big boy behavior

Wouldn't leaving before then be monumentally stupid?

Currently they get around $ 50 Million a year from the Big 10. That number is not fixed and may go higher.

Also, since their media rights are tied up for a decade they can't just sign a Notre Dame type deal and make it back.

To clarify, Michigan is against the private equity deal and a regent is talking about leaving being an option if the B1G insists on shoving it through over their objections.

USC is also against the deal, though it seems like their objection is mostly that they aren't in the top tier of revenue recipients (OSU, PSU, Michigan). UM's objections are philosophically against the private capital deal.

It feels very weird to vehemently side with USC and Michigan on anything, but here I am.

My point is that its hardly a threat when its 10 years away.

Also, like Andy said I actually think they're on the "right" side of this not wanting to take this deal, or any like it.

But that is exactly when it would hurt the investment firm the most. The large upfront payout ( $2.5 B ) means it's the next media rights deal when they get the ROI. Not having Michigan in that deal hurts them. Hence the reason they've said it's a no go if all 18 Big 10 teams don't say yes.

Look at Notre Dame, their current media deal is paying them about $ 50 Million a year. Plus the $ 17 Million they get for that BS arrangement with the ACC. That's roughly the same as the top tier Big 10 teams. They get to make themselves an easy path to the CFP with how they schedule. For example, look at this year. They played 3 real games this year ( Miami, Texas A&M and USC ) and lost 2 of them ( Miami and A&M ) only beating USC. Currently they are ( unjustifiably ) sitting pretty in terms of getting in the playoff.

Michigan could easily do the same and just make a similar BS type agreement with say the Big 12 for 5 games. It would give them an easier path to the CFP and would help keep the brand high up the list of desired media deals.

Illini at 21?  I'll take it, think they've a real good chance to finish 9-3 with a decent bowl bid.

Yup. They’re still have a chance for a very good (relative to Illinois) season.

They’re one win away from tying the school record for most wins in consecutive seasons. Like ever. 130-whatever seasons of Illinois football and they’ve never totaled more than 18 wins in consecutive seasons.  (10 in ‘89 and 8 in ‘90.)

they’re going to back-to-back bowls for the first time in 14 seasons and have made 3 bowls in 4 years for the first time in 31  seasons.

Bielema set the school mark for most wins by a coach in his first 5 seasons.

Recruiting looks solid and the vibes are good.  This is very, very easily the best shape the Illinois program has been in for 30+ years.

And also they are never leaving the Big Ten, so it's a hollow threat from the jump

Don't count your chickens. I would not be surprised if in five years the college landscape looks a lot different than now. They could have tiered leagues and divisions with no conferences.

Totally agree regarding the state of the program.  Happened to be watching ESPN when the playoff rankings were being shown and was shocked to see the Illini at 21.  After the Indiana game I thought them completely removed from the national dialog.

Filling the Stadium up on Saturdays with paying customers is huge also.  I am somewhat surprised Beillima hasn't come up in some of these coaching searches.

I love complicated playoff scenarios and decision trees.  And even with that, the ACC scenarios make my brain hurt.

The important takeaways are

1) The one team that could get an at-large bid (Miami) is also the least likely of the 5-6 teams to make the ACC title game.

2) Duke is somehow still in it.  If they won the ACC title, I would bet they would still sneak into the playoff, but they have 5 losses so it could easily be argued that two minor conference teams should get in and for them to be left out.

Ouch.  They should never have been ranked at this point in the season.  No way the team I saw tonight should be sniffing the top 25.

That's true, Wisconsin has a legitimately good defense.  Offensively they're pathetic and the Illini managed to make them look good.

The Badgers have no QB.  They’re down to a freshman who didn’t know the playbook.

Complete embarrassment on that side of the ball for the Illini.

They absolutely should have been ranked. And now they absolutely deserve to be laughed at for that performance. Haven't had one that bad since the Virginia game in Bielema's first year
