he's not ready to call a major league game. He's a nervous kid- hitting was tough enough for him. Catcher is a much tougher role than DH. 
Reese McGwire is actually a solid catcher, solid enough he's been getting lots of work for years. He is just usually a poor bat, but he has hot streaks (like this).
