The Chicago Cubs acquired Kyle Tucker with the expectation being they could extend the superstar outfielder. While nothing has come to fruition, Hector Gomez is reporting that there is a potential deal on the table.

Tucker is off to a torrid start this season with the Cubs slashing .317/.442/.667 with 5 home runs. The 28-year-old has already accrued 1.1 fWAR on the season.

Normally, I'd take anything Hector said with a grain of salt. With that said, I'll say this:

1. Mike Rodriguez claimed the Cubs had approached Tucker

2. When Jesse Rogers refuted it, he doubled down.

3. This is super specific. It wasn't just a "hey Mike is right" it's got numbers and details.

It feels more real for those reasons. I'm not going to say it's happening, but that feels more than just a normal Hector/Mike duet.

I'm not in the "no way the Cubs sign Tucker" camp, but I'd be very surprised by this timing, and I trust Hector Gomez about as far as I could throw him.

I agree with you. But we now have 2 people suggesting talks are ongoing. I choose to believe they are. And if these are actual numbers that means the Cubs FO does realize it has to go long years with superstars. So that is very encouraging. First PCA extension talk and now Tucker.

I fully believe that the Cubs have decided internally that they want to keep Tucker around long term.  But I'm not convinced that they're going the full on "negotiate an extension" route yet.  Let it simmer...let Kyle get a feel for Chicago in the summer.  I mean, I'd be thrilled if this is right, it just doesn't seem like the Cubs MO to just throw money at the right guy like this.

I can see them tossing some numbers and a framework around now. But I agree with you, the harder sell will come around the all star break IMO. Let him see the ballpark and the fan base with beautiful weather and a crazy crowd standing in the second inning. I know in the end money is going to talk. But I also have to believe if he is given what he wants he would love to stay in Chicago after experiencing baseball as an cub.

I agree that something would/might happen a little later in the year after Tucker gets a bit more comfortable.

I also think the Cubs FO/ownership might have gotten their eyes opened that this is just how things are with the Vlad deal going down. Like...it's not just the "big money clubs" doing business like this. If Toronto is gonna wheel and deal like that, maybe WE have to do that as well. Time will tell, obviously, but if Tucker performs as we expect him to maybe the stars align.

Heyman reports that Cubs will try to extend Tucker before he hits FA.  I predict they give a half-effort and fail:

Kind of a lay up prediction. If he decides to go to free agency anything they offered would be considered a half-effort. And most likely he goes to free agency. I think no matter what team he was traded to he would go to free agency.

They honestly need to put 500 on the table and just be done with it.

I agree. But even if they do that doesn’t mean he signs. He may test free agency no matter what they offer.

Absolutely, but at least it means they put a real competitive offer on the table which means even if it's not Tucker, we can be optimistic that they're willing to put money out there for a star. Thus far they haven't shown they're willing to do that.

Dave Kaplan: "I'm hearing the Cubs have wrapped their brain around, doesn't mean he'll accept it, wrapped their brain around whatever it costs, we're paying it and they want to keep Tucker...what I'm hearing".

This is from his recent pod that dropped today.

I'm gonna choose to drink the koolaid and believe that Tom finally got his head out of his ass.

Honestly, he has to. If not now, when? If not Tucker, who? He needs to get this done. And if/when he does that frees up another tradable prospect for pitching help. While he is at it he needs to offer PCA 8 years and $120M or something like that. Time to change the narrative on the Cubs owners being cheap. Next year if they want some salary relief they can move either Sazuki or Happ and bring up Ballestaros to DH. Sooner the better this wa they know they can trade prospects who won’t ba e a spot on the team anyway with Fhcker and PCA locked down.
