This is great. I hope they let them use Alluminium bats.

Sacreligious sure, but chicks and CubinNY dig the long ball. I don't want to see any 3-1 or 2-0 games.

Riiight, nothing like a couple fatalities at the corners to spice up a game.

The bats will be wooden, like they are in the Olympics and Olympic qualifying games.

Then why even have pitchers? Why not just let them hit off of a tee?

I wonder if this tournament will be as "star studded" as everyone claims it will be. Would MLB teams let their players participate in this tournament, risking an injury to them that would carry into the regular season?

According to one union official, major league clubs will not be able to block any of their players from participating. .... One union official said that insurance to cover player contracts in the event of injuries during the tournament had been addressed to MLB’s satisfaction.

If star players are involved then how can countries like Italy, Australia etc have a chance? It doesnt seem like it would be a fair competition to me.

OK, well that shuts me up.

Although insurance covering the monetary losses still wouldn't be able to cover the production lost if a Pujols, Vlad, or Zambrano got hurt.

I think it's a terrible idea.

I didn't think it could get any better.

I'm a Cubs fan. I don't care if Venezuela beats the Dominican or if Zambrano strikes out Rolen in a meaningless game.

No good can come of this.

Japan sent a team of All-Stars to Athens last year and the only team to beat them was Australia, and they did so twice. Strange things can happen in short series.

Ask our last internationl team of NBA all stars about that. The rest of the world will catch up quick enough.

Nevermind that non US MLB players would be on their home country. The Japanese team would not be shabby. Neither would the Dominican.

1. They don't.

2. MLB doesn't care about fair. MLB cares about getting a final eight of:

USA

Cuba

Japan

Dominican Republic

Venezuela

Korea

Puerto Rico

Canada

and a semifinal with: Japan v. Cuba; USA v. Dominican Republic or Venezuela followed by a USA-Cuba final.

I think this is an outstanding idea and I'm looking forward to watching it.

I'm a Cubs fan, too. But I also enjoy baseball in formats besides MLB, and I can't hardly wait to watch this, especially if the Cuban team participates.

So would the players that participate in this tourney play in those games instead of the normal Spring Training games, or would they go back and forth if possible?

My thoughts exactly. Much ado about jack squat.

It's nice for those who will watch, though. If it grows the game, then I suppose it's all right.

I think it would be a great showcase of some of the lesser known (but quite good) international players out there.

Plus, the Domincan team will be sick!
