The Cubs and outfielder Travis Jankowski have agreed to a deal, reports Ari Alexander of KPRC 2. The details of the deal for the Excel Sports Management client haven’t been publicly reported yet. If it’s a major league deal, the Cubs would have to open a 40-man roster spot. If it’s a minor league pact, the veteran will presumably receive an invite to spring training.

He's a fine 5th OF option but has absolutely no power and is a disappointing add if he's getting a MLB deal. He's not better than Canario.

Id bet that's a MiLB deal and a camp invite. He can provide depth as a worst case rash of injury at the start of the year.

Yeah.  It's not impossible he gets the last bench spot as he'd be a better defensive CF than anyone currently in the running.  But my guess is that this is in case, god forbid, PCA gets hurt and we have to push Alcantara into the starting CF role early.

Reminds me of when they signed David Peralta and Garrett Cooper last year. Just depth bench guys that they can add for ST and see if they got anything

I think Jankowski makes the team as the 26th man. He is a good outfielder who can run the bases. I think the Cubs are planning on running a lot this season. He won’t play much, but, IMO, he will be on the roster.

In the CF backup mix with Brujan it looks like.  Counsell said they prefer good young prospects like Alcantara, Caissie etc getting regular PAs in the minors rather than riding the bench.  Hard for Canario to have success in a bench role.

On the bench the Cubs seem to like walks, speed, and defense. These things tend not to "slump" much so if you're not playing regularly I guess they're easier to maintain than a big swing.

Could also explain why they went Berti over others.  Mastrobuoni and Tauchman were their guys too.

I assume the bench is likely 2 INF, 1 OF, 1 C, plus Seiya?
