Are there any sort of crazy high schoolers in the draft for the year after this? Obviously, you cannot project which players in the draft this year will stay in school and which will sign with their teams but what type of upper tier talent might be available?

At the bottom of this 2005 mock draft, BA has an early look at the top 12 college and high school prospects in 2006 (subscriber only). The aforementioned Kyle Drabek (RHP/SS, will be drafted to be a pitcher) is the top HS prospect and LHP Andrew Miller of North Carolina is the top college prospect.

I have also heard a lot of good things about LHP Gavin Brooks, who plays HS ball down in San Diego County, BA had him as #3 on their HS list. It's rare for me to hear about San Diego HS prospects here in LA (especially when we have our share of good prospects), so I think that says something about him.

As far as '06 Illinois prospects, not much in the HS level to speak of. Connor Powers is the best out of Benet Academy.

I was at a showcase in Naperville yesterday which featured some of the better prospects in state, but 2 of the top players in state who were supposed to be there weren't. Overall, it wasn't worth my time.

Only 1 player caught my eye, a kid out of Andrew HS.

Don't forget Alex Gordon HAS NOT signed with the Royals, and he has just register for classes at Nebraska. With the season the Royals are having, it wouldn't SURPRISE me if Gordon returns to school, instead of signing with the Royals.

Long Beach State IF Evan Longoria gets my vote for most unfortunate name in next year's draft.

One tiny little "n" seperates him from greatness...is he as hott as her?

To change the subject from attractive ladies who are dating Tony Parker, BA says that UNC's LHP Andrew Miller has been dominating in the Cape Cod League this summer and has made himself the early favorite for the top pick overall. He still has control problems, though.

RHP Daniel Bard, also a Tar Heel, is the second best prospect in the Cape Cod League and Mr. Longoria comes in at third.

What is the status of the compensation rule with regard to free agent signings.

Do type A free agents still require first pick compensation? Are top 15 picks still protected?

If that's the case, it'll be really interesting to see what the Cubs do the next three weeks. They are currently top 15 protected. Finishing at .500 or better would likely mean they fall out of the top 15. In baseball it's not really important whether you pick 10, 15 or 20, but if you sign a Type A free agent it's very important.

The year they signed Latroy Hawkins, they lost their 1st round pick because of it. I was upset that Hendry wasted his Type A option on a reliever, and lots of people here ridiculed me for thinking so much about the draft picks instead of the big league team. I still think it has to be on the mind of the GM. If you are going to lose a first round pick, you better end up signing a real difference maker. If you sign 1 Type A middle reliever, you better follow that up with a Type A starter or a Type A position player, in order to justify the loss of draft picks. I don't have a problem losing picks, but if you do it, doing for important players.

Odds are Jim will be signing a good amount of guys this offseason. As crappy as this season has been, I would at least like to see them keep a top 15 draft pick (even though this team has not been good with top picks). A .500 record is hardly a goal. Three straight winning seasons isn't success. Mediocrity is nothing to strive for. But I just know Dusty is dying to get back to .500 again, just so he can say how much of a winner he is.

There had been discussion after the recent CBA deal that everything to do with the draft would be revamped, but to date it has not yet happened. I agree with most of your points, however I would like to see the Cubs get back into the International market. I'm not sure why, but it seems that they have strayed away from signing impact talent the last couple of years in Asia, Venezuela, and to an extent the DR. The loss of a 1st round pick due to the signing of a FA could be recouped in a sense if the Cubs could identify and land top talent in the International market.

I assume the Cubs chief scout in the DR - Jose Serra is still there, but he's been quiet the past two years. Leon Lee of course is long gone....I'm not sure if there is anyone currently scouting for the Cubs in Venezuela.

I think that part of that may be due to them devoting more money to the major league payroll. Despite the increased attendance, I think they have cut back in areas to save some money. International scouting could be one of those areas.

so they can draft him again next year with the number 1 overall pick? That is all they have to tell him to get him to sign now. Hey buddy if you wanna waste a year to be right back in the same situation go right ahead.

A player has to give permission to a team to be re-drafted.

Are you sure? I thought that was only with draft and follows. But, if not I guess he does have some leverage.

I'm pretty sure that's not just draft-and-follows. John Mayberry, Jr. gave Seattle permission to draft him again this year as junior out of Stanford after the Mariners drafted him 3 years ago out of high school (Mayberry was selected by the Rangers instead).
