Monken isn't even 60. I mean, Pete Carroll and Belichick are both north of 70. Monken's age doesn't phase me.

Can't say I know much about him but he's an Illinois native, has coached one of the best offenses in the league the last two years and has a ton of experience. Could do worse.

We know whatever decision the Bears make will be wrong.  What if it is Ben Johnson?  Is that wrong by default?

It's not necessarily that they will make the wrong decision (although the often do). It's more that whatever decision they make, it just won't work out.

It boils down to the trenches, if Poles successfully addresses them, most especially the OL.  They'll be competitive with any of Johnson, Brady, Kingsburry, Monken or even McCarthy.  Coaching matters but, it's still more about Poles ability to fix the roster for me, that's the primary concern.

Remember, Nagy was seen as a good (albeit not great) hire at the time as an offensive-minded HC who could unlock Trubisky's potential and talent.

Kingsburry,

Its interesting that he doesn't appear to be on the list. Was it because he already interviewed for the OC job last year and reports are it was a terrible interview?

Assumption on my part, your probably correct and Kingsburry doesn't interview at all.  In this case, with a fixed roster, the Bears will competitive with any of Johnson, Brady, Monken or McCarthy.

I understand casting a wide net and getting free info on how people see your organization, but we are closing in on 20 confirmed interviews. Feels a bit unwieldly

The new rules require such a long runway, I'm not overly concerned with it. Outside of the few candidates who aren't currently employed I think there can't even be in person interviews until the 20th.  I'm guessing while 3 hours I'd allowed under the rules, many will clock in under that.

But a lot is probably for appearamces. And maybe for negotiation purposes with agents.

Is it me, or did Warren basically just say Poles has no job security?

Why should Poles have job security?  I wanted him fired, in lieu of that, I do not see the issue with making Poles prove he can get it right.  This whole lame duck GM thing is bit overblown by the media, while it may mean something to prospective head coaches, I do not believe it's the be all, end all.  If the eventual head coach comes in and starts winning it will be mostly due to Poles fixing the roster.  Given this, the GM situation will effectively fix itself in that Poles will be extended or re-signed.

I took it as kind of a hint that they're definitely not tied to him long term. Like a coach *cough* Ben Johnson *cough* can probably bring in his own guy if they like the coach enough

It might take that many interviews to find that one, special coach who also wants to draft a kicker in the 1st

tricky, but he’s gotta be out there - Poles

If the eventual head coach comes in and starts winning, it will be from that coach taking over personnel decisions from Poles, either formally or informally

Yea I am glad that is sounds like there is no extension for Poles.  That whole component was way overblown by a fan base that loves obsessing over minute details that matter little.

Messaging can use work though lol.  Honestly I think George probably answered it better (though asked a slightly different way).

If there is any issue with Poles as lame duck it's him hiring out of his own self interest in hiring a coach who won't get him forced out.  But 99% of the complaints of him being lame duck are centered on attracting the candidates.  I don't think that is an issue and could be a low key positive (the ability to force out and scape goat Poles early on if needed).

Thats where Warrens role in the process, especially if George is really Poles biggest backer gets interesting.

Poles is giving his PC now... odds on him being fired by lunch? lol

After Poles gives his presser, George and Warren are probably going to talk for hours about what they should do with Poles and then fire him lol

“Clear vision, developmental mindset, really good game management, and a plan to develop the quarterback."

Well maybe they aren’t hiring a leader of men after all!

“Clear Vision”

ugh.  Corporate speak.  Think outside the box.
