I didn't realize how bad Cecconi was this year. Makes me wonder if Wicks would've gotten it done from our end.

But why do we need Naylor? Busch is cheaper just as good and has more control left. Naylor is a FA after this year.

More or less thinking aloud. I know people on the boards here love Naylor and maybe he'd have made a nice DH or whatever. Any thought about that went out the window with Tucker, obviously.

That's a lot more than I expected Santana to get.  After the Goldschmidt deal and all the talk about how frozen the 1B market was from Passan I kind of wondered if we would be able to steal Santana for like half of that.

I'm curious if this crazy run on 1B happening right now helps or hurts the Cubs coming down with a good deal on a Mark Canha type

That feels like a extremely light return for Naylor, even if its only for one year

Sounds like both the Rays and Cleveland were after Ceccone. Weird profile but when two good pitching orgs are after a guy, you wonder if there's something there.

What would that look like with the Cubs? Trade Busch for a starting pitcher and sign Alonso? Or maybe trade Suzuki for a starting pitcher and sign Alonso, Santander or Hernandez?

I would think he'll probably get offers to start. The Mariners are going to have to do something eventually.

Feel like the Cubs are going to invest the majority of their Bellinger savings on RP. There are some decent options out there that were non tendered to fill in the bench. Ramon Laureano would be an ok, cheap option for a 4th outfielder/bench bat for LHP.

Breslow came at a perfect time but in 2 years he's built this rotation:

Crochet

Houck

Bello

Beuhler

Crawford/Giolito, more

Pretty darn good and really cheap

I think this year will be interesting.  Most of the pitchers on that staff had amazing first halves with their "stop throwing fastballs" gambit and then cratered in the second half once the league figured it out.

Beginning to be slim pickings in the SP market

I don't believe they are in on any of the left over SPs besides Roki. Probably more likely to see a SP come from a trade. With the amount of money going to pitchers that would bump Assad to the bullpen, I have to imagine they would rather just go with Assad and build the depth under him.

Fully agreed. Any starter joining the Cub staff that isn't Sasaki is coming via trade.

Sick move by the D’Backs. That roster is very very talented (and cheap ofc)

Edit: It’s funny I saw an MLBTR post saying he was seeking $245 the other day and was going to respond the league put out a “go horsefeathers yourself” piece. Two days later he signed for 6/210 rotfl. I’m not a betting man but immediately after that came out knew he wasn’t touching $245 or even the like $229 mentioned in it from Strasburg. What a hellscape The Future (2.0) is

he took less to play near home

Same annual and he has an opt out after 2 years. So not a bad deal for him.

Took advantage of zona's flat tax

It was extremely likely that this was also his best offer.
