Better last 30 minutes overall, but need to improve passing to get better scoring chances. Power plays were terrible, empty net at the end got them some good chances and a post, but couldn't get one in at the end.

Last night's net game score for the Hawks:

Summary: Bedard and Teuvo good, Vlasic OK but bad defensively, Brodie bad (also Mrazek bad overall, doesn't show up on this chart). Back end of Hawks rotation was really bad, Bedard/Teravainen generated basically all the offensive chances for the team last night.

I'm not going to pretend to be a hockey expert but it seems really dumb to roll out guys like Craig Smith (35), TJ Brodie (34), Patrick Maroon (36) with the kind of talent they just sent down to Rockford. Like, it's another lost year anyways, who do you want developing Nazar, Korchinski, etc....Richardson and the coaches you are paying NHL salaries for, or the Rockford guys?

They very clearly want those guys playing big minutes in all situations in the AHL, rather than limited minutes in the NHL. I think they probably went with one or two too many vets, but somebody will be injured before Halloween and there will be plenty of options for young players to step up. The AHL guys are paid to develop kids, the NHL guys are paid to win NHL games.

Fair point on the injuries, and I guess you hope one of the old guys turns into a second round pick in February. But I mean....the second power play has Martinez and Smith on it. Seems like there's plenty of availability for 'big minutes'

Davidson wanted to make roster spots competitive. Korchinski wasn't ready for NHL action last season. Nazar also had not played at the pro level. It sucks from a fan standpoint but they are taking the right approach with them. No need to rush our prospects to the NHL. It's impossible to make it a full season without injuries so we will see them in Chicago sooner than later.

MLB has every team start on the same day

Baseball teams play 6-7 games a week with regularity. Making a bunch of teams play back to backs to open the year seems a little excessive, and the alternative is you have an opening day and then it disappears the next day.

The Dodgers and Padres played a week earlier than everyone else.

And MLB is such that teams play every day 4-5 times per week.

What a way to lose tonight and spoil an exceptional start from Soderblom. lol

I learned last night that I can't watch the Blackhawks on ESPN+ because blackout restrictions are stupid. I can watch them on replay, but it's kind of hard to get excited about watching games you likely already know the outcome.

Blackouts need to die. If you pay for it you should be able to watch it regardless of where you are.

I'm guessing these blackouts are more about the contractual rights moreso than a sold out stadium. But yeah, now that they are limited in their reach, they should waive the restrictions.

Hey, the Blackhawks won Saturday night.

On the road (where they got just 7 wins last season).

Against the defending Stanley Cup finalists and current Stanley Cup favorite.

And Bedard was the best player on the ice (by game score, Teuvo by quality adjusted game score).

Bedard was not good against the Jets, but a win like this is encouraging in terms of "hey, this might be a real NHL quality team this year".

Definitely a quality win, though looking at Corsi tells me that it was a pretty fortunate outcome for the Hawks.  I'll take them however we can get them though.

Hawks are going to be competitive in most games this year. It just isn't going to reflect much in the overall record.

Teuvo's early chemistry with Bedard is exciting. He could be looking at a career best season.

Watched the game on free preview of NHL Center Ice, until a PP towards the end, all they did, for about 5 minutes, is ice the puck.  Thought certain the Oilers were going to capitalize on one or more of numerous opportunities off the icing.

Blackhawks won home opener 4-2 against sharks, and did so while failing to convert on a 5on3 or hit an empty net for final two minutes despite multiple turnovers by sharks. The top line is looking good. Reichel got minimal minutes centering the 4th line. Alec Martinez hit the IR as the first of the new old guys to go down, not counting the goalie. He probably wont be the last.

Chicago currently sitting at 6th in the central in terms of points percentage, at .500. 10 western conference teams are above them.
