Please let me enjoy my summer before turning all attention, hopes and dreams toward the football season

a little envious because i haven't been able to think about anything else since sometime in january.

summer has been a minor distraction, at least, but camp is pretty much here now.

So should we be at all concerned that Caleb and Rome haven’t signed contracts yet?  Like I’m not worried they won’t sign, but rookies report on Tuesday and we obviously want them to get as much practice time as possible in camp.  I thought NFL rookie contracts were pretty straightforward so wondering what the hang up is.

I thought they had slotted money for draft picks now? Wasnt there a CBA that fixed this (after so many first round picks were routinely holding out)?

Yeah which is why I found it weird that they haven’t signed yet. There’s gotta be some other things besides salary that can be negotiated that they are hung up on.

either way the Hard Knocks thing is a good point. No way the McCaskeys allow the holdout of their high profile number 1 draft pick (and slightly lesser extent their other top 10 pick) become a Hard Knocks storyline. Caleb’s camp certainly knows this.

I believe the issue is how and when guaranteed money is paid.  For example, a signing bonus of x amount could be made in installments versus all at once, etc.

Yea there's still plenty to negotiate even though the basics are basically pre-determined.

the fact that you even follow dan mcneil (or don't have him muted, at least) is your first mistake

They need to hurry up and get those guys signed. It would be a mistake to let this drag on any further.

Yep, especially if Caleb is not at the point where he can even say the plays at the line yet. He needs every minute of training camp.

lol...sure its nothing but

Bears don't like setting precedence and giving Caleb a no franchise tag commitment would be just that. Caleb had to know that request would fall on deaf ears.

Has that ever been negotiated in an NFL contract? If they give Caleb the 5th year, you’d think they’d know if they want him long-term or not at that point.

Never been in a rookie contract but definitely has been in plenty of vet contracts.

I wasn't entirely sure it was even legal in a rookie contract but two of my most trusted cap/CBA guys discussed it as legit on Twitter so..

I think its more about leverage when negotiating that second contract.  Caleb gets a lot more leverage if he's negotiating knowing the Bears risk losing him if they can't come to terms because the franchise tag isnt a last ditch option.

Probably would never come to that but all about extracting whatever leverage you can get.
