Do you think they'll make an announcement if they're sticking with the status quo? Like an announcement to retain Flus and Getsy? or will we only get an announcement if there are changes?

There will inevitably be some type of announcemeknt, but perhaps not today.

Think I saw Wednesday might already be on calendar for press conference day?  So that would be absolute latest if so.

I think we’ll know Eberflus’s future within a day or two, but guys have been fired a week or two after by other teams so it wouldn’t be unprecedented, especially if Warren is now running the process. Getsy may or may not be addressed immediately.

I thought this was really good at laying out the timeline:

Harbaugh would throw a lot of this out the window though.

I feel like Poles may just look at the 7 wins as a step in the process, and put more of an onus on next years performance for major changes outside of QB. What I expect is

Flus stays, Getsy stays, Fields traded

Trying to remember specific examples of that 1-2 week delay (for non playoff teams). Is it usually in cases where there were some larger front office question and interworkings that slowed it down?

The number one pick in the draft. The number nine pick in the draft. A flawed yet incredibly athletic, young quarterback who could net the Bears multiple draft picks in a trade. This is a huge tipping point the Bears face that could have an incredibly positive effect on the next 5-10 years.

Is Matt Eberflus the person to who leads for the next 5-10 years? I'm of the opinion that he is not. While the Bears improved as a team this season--and I'll give Eberflus credit here--they improved a lot after their first four games, his coaching style cost the Bears a few victories. And it didn't seem like lessons were learned (beginning with week 4 against Denver).

Eberflus is RIck Renteria 2.0. Thanks for getting us to this point. We need a next level person at the helm.

Since it seems like I do this every year...

My top HC candidates:

1) Jim Harbaugh

2a) Jerod Mayo LB/Assistant HC (Assume he'll stay in NE)

2b) Mike MacDonald DC - Ravens

3) Frank Smith OC - Miami

4) Ben Johnson OC - Detroit

5) Dave Canales OC - Tampa

6) Aaron Glenn DC - Detroit

Completely agree. This is almost an unprecedented opportunity for quick improvements and building an offensive infrastructure that will keep a team in contention year after year. But the head coach matters and I don’t see a path to Eberflus being the guy that gets it done. They need an entirely new offensive regime, and may even be hesitant to do that.

Just the fact that it has not at least leaked that Ebeflus is staying a good sign he might be axed?. If he was staying, wouldn't something have been said to this point of the day?

I do wonder what the positive news about Eberflus really was, were there any qualifiers to Eberflus's retention like beat GB or don't embarrass us in the rest of the games or keep improving? Win 50% of your remaining games? or was it just good ol feely stuff like "we like Eberflus and see him as our leader"?

That doesn’t mean much to me. All the signs were pointing toward him returning. There were a ton of positive vibes about him and his defense. I wouldn’t interpret a lack of a link to mean anything.

I think the number one thing is Poles hired him and sabotaged his first year. Eberflus played the good soldier and didn’t complain, even after talking about the engine that makes the d run and then Poles not acquiring one in two seperate offseasons.

Poles has a dilemma. Do you stick with the guy that guided your tank to its intended target? If so the you have to be prepared to offer an extension as early as this offseason, and definitely by next year. But then you probably have to fire Eberflus in the middle of the next contract. Or do you wipe the slate clean and get the right guy now, and with that start your own firing clock?

I thought we heard last week that Eberflus was pretty much pushed onto Poles that Poles wasn’t really the one who hired him?

Courtney Cronin made a comment on a podcast last week to that affect but kind of walked it back.

Poles supposedly turned down Viking overtures at time Bears were pursuing him.  Whether it was solely him or a committee approach, I think we can surmise he was on board with the general process, whether Eberflus was 100% his or not.

The "walk back" from Cronin. This was in response to a question that was basically "Poles didn't have a say?" question

Never said that. Listen to the whole podcast more than just that clip. The timing of both interviews, who was a part of the committee for HC/GM interviews, the well known connection in representation for both, etc. Pat and I were talking about the prospect that Eberflus will be back in 2024 and if that pans out (as NFLN reported Saturday), how that’s a decision Poles has the juice on whereas the initial hire was positioned from a committee approach where the final say leaned more heavily George/Ted. Obviously Poles was a part of that but the circumstances initially were different than they are now. That’s what my point was.

Obviously a bit more nuance there.  You can pass off platitudes about "football decisions" all you want, but they do own a football team and if you believe any owner doesn't have ultimate say/indluence on a Head coach hire on any of the 32 teams you'd be naive.

Hiring a GM first

Hiring a HC first

Hiring both on commitee/dual approach

All football decisions and if you actually look at league history none really preferable to the other. The only real annoying thing is McCaskeys insistence to obfuscate the issue, but the media can also be annoying about it so I can't say I don't kind of understand why lol

Hopefully they’re waiting to notify next of kin.

Seriously though, I expect Getsy and Fields gone, and Flus stays.  Poles wants his shot at drafting his ideal QB to run this ship.  I wonder how much Flus is going to have to accept outside opinions on who the OC is.  I don’t want him picking the guy on his own.

They should've already had conversations by now to gauge whether or not Harbaugh would be interested.  Unless there are rules preventing it that I'm overlooking.

Since he's not employed by a nfl team, no rules against having convos with him.  But if it somehow came out they had an agreement before meeting Rooney Rule requirements, that is where the issue would be.

So what was the headcount on monday? Washington and Atlanta fired head coaches. A handful of teams either fired a coordinator or one resigned. Carolina canned the GM.

pretty uneventful day, even if you take into account the three midseason firings. 5 feels like a low number with the amount of bad teams in this league.

I hope you're correct, he could be one of the few capable of flipping the Green Bay narrative, Eberflus never will.  The Bears situation with GB has some the vibes of Michigan' with Ohio State prior to his arrival.

It's a damn good situation for him to step into. Tons of cap space to dominate FA and set yourself up to dominate the draft with a bevy of high picks. I wonder who he likes most at QB.

Belichick will go to Atlanta where after a couple of seasons the rest of the league will finally say, "oof, I guess it really was all Tom Brady."

He needs like 20 wins to pass Shula, I don't know if Atlanta is the right fit. Although that division is the worst in the league
