Now that the perfect game is over, lets appreciate what Smyly has done after a really rough first start.  Last 3 starts, all against playoff teams from last year and this is what he's done:

18.1 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 20 K

I seem to remember Ted Lilly took a perfecto late into the game but i could be wrong

Edit: maybe it was just a no hitter

I assume you're remembering his no-hit bid in Milwaukee against the Astros the day after Big Z's no-hitter

I didn’t see the roster move bringing Estrada up. I’m assuming they sent Assad back down?

Correct

Cubs have surpassed the Rangers and now have the 2nd best RD in baseball at +48.  Still a long way from the Rays at +83 but hell yeah

The Cubs are currently 2nd in position player WAR behind the Rays.  They are 4th in pitching WAR.

There's some luck on both sides of the ball (BABIP on the position player side, dongs on the pitcher side), but even if you strip that out it's probably been a top 10 team on both sides of the ball despite a pretty tough schedule to this point.

@Brock Beauchamp Are you by chance interested in purchasing any Bears, Bulls and/or Blackhawks forums?

I don't really follow any other sports. I still secretly love basketball but I lived in Los Angeles for ten years during the height of Shaq and Kobe. I just can't suffer through the Timberwolves' perpetual ineptitude.

So... no?

On July 10, 2022 Julio Urias had a bad start against the Chicago Cubs, pitching just 2 innings and giving up 5 ER.

Between July 11, 2022 and April 15, 2023, Urias had 17 starts and gave up 17 ER combined. His teams went 15-2 in those 17 starts

Between April 16, 2023 and April 21, 2023, Urias started twice against the Cubs, giving up 8 runs in 9 IP.  The Cubs won both games.

The Cubs own Julio Urias

I don't remember everything, especially anymore, but I'm pretty sure no Cub since I've been following the team (close to 25 years) has taken a perfect game this far.

Were there and other angles of the Smyly/Gomes collision shown in the TV broadcast?  I only saw the one replay and I can't determine whether either Smyly or Gomes actually had a chance to throw the runner out.
