After Louisville’s coach went to Cincinnati. Arguably both lateral moves, although I understand Brohm is all about going back to his Alma mater.

Heard someone make the argument that they think Brohm went to Louisville this time because the talent at Purdue is drying up a bit. First time Louisville went after him, they had Karlaftis, Moore, Bell, etc. and he wanted to ride that out. Now, they think he's not so confident in the last couple recruiting classes and coupled with Matt Painter's seeming disinterest in NIL on the basketball side, Brohm got to Louisville where he's got a fresh start and should have plenty of NIL backing in a conference that seems safe for now from the realignment stuff because of the ACC's grant of rights. Also, with B1G divisions likely going away and the coming addition of USC, their hopes of a conference title are essentially gone. Wouldn't expect a B1G champ other than Michigan, OSU, USC, or maybe PSU unless someone else has a truly special year. ACC seems more winnable

Yeah, the end of divisions should definitely be considered a factor. Like you said, basically none of the lesser programs in the B1G can stumble into a title now unless the top few programs all go into down cycles at the same time.

Seems like Satterfield never really had the fan base after he interviewed for the South Carolina job that went to Shane Beamer. Was thought to be on the hot seat as recently as this season. Curious hire by Cincinnati, really, which ought to have been able to attract any up-and-comer it wanted given the upward mobility of other recent coaches.

In related news, my alma mater is in the Div 2 National Championship game next weekend. When I first got there, the football team was a joke, with all of the cheers revolving around losing being ok. By my senior year, they were qualifying for the playoffs, and recent years had them making it to the semis occasionally. It will test my pirating resources to see if I can find a stream next week.

Mike Leach had a massive heart attack today. Airlifted to hospital. They’re saying he coded multiple times on the way. Is currently in ICU. They don’t think he’s gonna make it. Awful.

I thought one of the ESPN channels usually shows the D2 championship.

Yeah I think one of the ESPN channels (or ESPN+ streaming) shows the D2/D3 championship games for most sports.

That's terrible. All the best for him and his family.

Given the age of many of these coaches and the nature of their jobs it's a wonder this doesn't happen more often.

He’s only 61 apparently.

They’re saying he’s brain dead and family is being brought in to say goodbyes. Jeez.

Randy Walker is the obvious parallel. This sucks.

I hated him when he was at Tech only because he beat A&M so many times but I grew to love him once he left. He was such a unique character but also an incredible football mind. I was hoping we'd get many years of him being on pre-game shows and the like. Would have been amazing.

Ryan Walters, Illinois DC, to be next Purdue head coach.

He’s real young, but I think they got a really good one.

I might be wrong here but I can't remember the last coordinator to become a HC from IL, especially a power 5.

Directly a power 5, who knows. Locksley at Maryland was OC under Zook, but obviously had several steps in between, first one being head coach at New Mexico to the tune of a 2-26 record.

SSR already mentioned Locksley who eventually became HC at Maryland. He went OC Illinois > HC New Mexico (2-26) >

OC Maryland > interim HC Maryland (1-5) > OC Alabama > HC Maryland (20-28, but 2 straight bowl appearances in a beast of a division).

If I had to guess, I’d bet Maryland fans would have rather the school just skipped over the whole DJ Durkin, player dying in practice phase of the program’s history and just retained Locksley after 2015.

The last coordinator at Illinois to go directly to be a HC at a Power 5 school was Lou Tepper who was promoted from DC at Illinois to HC when Mackovic left for Texas.
