Today, Rivas, Marquez, and maybe Ortega depending on the plans for the OF.

You can actually pick them in the poll. :)

I went with Leiter, Marquez, Rivas and Ortega.

I did!

Not sure I understand the hurry to non-tender Leiter. He was excellent as a reliever and doesn't cost anything, worst case scenario you can try to sneak him through when you absolutely need the spot later in the offseason(and I'd at least consider Rucker and/or McKinstry first).

I probably just didn't watch enough games late in the season to build up faith in him. He's not a big stuff guy and he's out of options; that puts him behind the other relievers on the list for me. We're likely to sign several relievers this winter, so I just don't see a roster spot I want to hold for him. I'd rather non-tender him and try to re-sign him to a minor-league deal.

Aren't Wick and Ortega the only guys slated to make more than the league min? Those are the only two I'd have any urgency about today. And I'd probably dump Ortega and keep Wick.

The others can all be dealt with as space becomes needed in the off-season, but I would probably have Rivas, Uelmen, and Mckinstry at the front of the line to get cut.

Everybody gets tendered a contract by me. If you do that, you can carry Ortega and Wick into spring training just in case of injuries. Their contracts won't be fully guaranteed until after spring training.

Otherwise, DFA and outright the others as free agents are signed to major league deals.

Thinking about this a little more. The Cubs' 40 man is currently at 38 after adding prospects. And based on a combination of reporting and inference, this is the shopping list for the winter:

- An infielder (likely one if the shortstops)

- A 1B/DH

- A CF

- A catcher

- 2 SPs

- 2 or 3 relievers

That's 8 or 9 guys, meaning 6-7 spots will need to be freed up over the course of the winter. Let's call it 7. i think my plan would be:

- Non tender Ortega today

- Trade Madrigal

- Cut Higgins while trying to get him to stay at Iowa

- Cut Rivas, Uelmen, and Mckinstry as spots are needed

- Really try to honestly evaluate Marquez and his odds of still ending up an impact guy. Last cut comes down to him vs. Rucker

I'd be surprised if they cut Higgins. He performed well, the word of mouth about him via beat reporters is strong, and they probably are uneasy about Amaya being the 3rd catcher on the 40 man. That also points towards Rivas' fate being extra sealed(since Higgins can fake it at 1B for a few games) which is why I'd just non-tender him now. You have Young who was successfully outrighted if you need a bad AAA 1B, but more likely it's a place Wisdom can help too.

As for Marquez, I think that dream has to die and you might as well cut him in case some more utilitarian need pops up. The window for a really positive outcome is just too narrow given how far he has to go and the option clock ticking against him.

Mckinstry, Marquez, Ortega, Leiter for sure. And maybe one of Rucker, Roberts, Rodriguez or Uelman depending on other plans/adds. I like keeping Wick, he’s flashed eliteness and isn’t expensive, if he’s sucking by June/July cut him then.

Why keep Rivas with Mervis right there?

Rivas still has options and I believe there’s still something in the bat there. Plus for as great a year Mervis had and to be hopeful on him, it’s not like he’s a for sure thing so a little insurance/options wouldn’t hurt. Plus the LHH need. A Bellinger add would have me send him out though too.

Isn't it 39 guys on the 40 man? With the Tampa trade?

I believe we're at 38 right now.

IIRC...

The reason to non-tender guys now instead of waiting is that if it is done now, they can be added back to the roster at any time. If you drop them after the deadline, there are salary implications and I don't think they can be added back until 5/15. But I may have that backwards or it may have changed with the new CBA

I kinda like Leiter Jr, the reliever. It's not elite velocity but he does have a definite wipeout pitch in the splitter
