Well, he's better than Darnold and cost almost nothing, so OK.

Corral in 2023.

A nonzero part of this deal is that Corral can spend the year developing rather than get tossed to the wolves if Darnold had started and gotten hurt (as he did last year).

From #1 overall pick to being traded for a conditional 5th.

And replaced by a guy who is probably going to be suspended for the season.

Oof

lol why do we have a thread for a crappy qb being traded

because I didn't want to start a NFL offseason thread just for it either lol

plus megathreads are evil

i'm as anti-megathread as they come, but even I can't get behind a dedicated baker mayfield trade thread on nsbb

also, "baker to the panthers?" in what world has he earned first-name-basis status?

Anyways back to the move. I am trembling with glee waiting for the Watson suspension to come down. Browns might ultimately get some good seasons out of Watson but lets recap what they did:

-Gave significant assets to acquire a great QB but one who has 20+ allegations of sexual misconduct, has not played a game in 1.5 years, and is awaiting a massive suspension

-Gave that QB a massive extension

-Did not have a plan to figure out what to do with their current franchise QB and ended up trading him away for essentially nothing

Now Watson is looking at a suspension that will likely continue into the 2023 season. When he plays his first game with Cleveland it will be nearly 3 years since his last game which is roughly the amount of time between games that Vick had after going to jail. The Browns who are otherwise in a win now position are forced to use Jacoby Brissett at QB and are limited in draft assets because of the Watson trade (though I assume Watson's contract will not count against the cap while suspended?). Oh and the QB they gambled their future on is a piece of horsefeathers.

I may not believe in karma but sometimes I wonder.

Great trade for the Panthers, so I hate it. Baker is poised for a huge comeback this season. His shoulder was held together with superglue last year, and it was for the Browns organization.

Yes and that's the other thing too....it's not like the Browns had a terrible QB situation. Baker is Baker but clearly injuries had an effect on his play and he actually really liked playing in Cleveland. I get that the Browns had to make a decision on his future contractually but it seems really weird to take such a gigantic risk to get a low character guy like Watson and then extend him instead of bringing back Baker and/or maybe working something out with him for the next few years.

Whooooaaah. Aaron Rodgers is a deep thinker, man. If he weren’t good at football he’d be doing shrooms and telling us how cool 311 is.

The Browns are somehow in not that bad of a situation, all things considered. Browns got 2 3rd round comps for Adofo Mensah going to the Vikings. So they have a couple early picks the next few years despite not having any 1sts from the Watson trade. They also somehow have managed to have a TON of cap space in 2022 still (48M+ depending on how much they ate of Mayfield's money).

I think the play here will be a trade for Jimmy Garoppolo. Jimmy G is now the last domino remaining, they aren't going to trade him to Seattle, so that leaves the Browns as the only team with a huge QB need that might make a move. Once the Watson suspension is official, I'd imagine the Jimmy G trade goes down shortly thereafter.

Jimmy G would give them a guy that can give them a legit QB that has shown he can take a team to the playoffs. They are also one of the few teams that can afford to take on his contract at this point. And that contract isn't terrible, considering he's a FA after 2022. Which works out perfectly for the Browns, who will likely get Watson back in 2023. Jimmy G would probably want a long-term deal in a trade, but the market is dried up and this would serve as an audition season for him where he makes a lot of money and he has a good enough team that he can take them to the playoffs and get his long-term deal after the season with another team.

The Browns are in cap hell going forward, but Jimmy G doesn't really affect that since he's a FA.

There's a pretty vast difference between paying a hooker for a handy and assaulting women against their will.

Let's also point out that this suspension comes with no fine somehow (other than game salaries lost). And luckily for Deshaun, the Browns structured his contract so that he only loses $243,500 of the $230,000,000 they are going to give him as a reward for sexually assaulting 25+ women. That's just barely over a 1/10 of a percent of his contract for those scoring at home, (against a woman's will).
